It would in theory be possible to add some features through the plugin system of DVD Profiler. I do not know how you feed data to your app, but my WP7 app got the data from a website (which was then fed by the XML and images). It would be possible to post data back to the website and then having a plugin in DVD Profiler read it back and apply changes to the collection. Not that I could ever be bothered building it myself, but then - I am lazy.

I copy the XML and the images to the SD card (like you I did originally get the data from a website but I thought it easier, more sensible and (more importantly for people on restrictive data contracts) cheaper to copy the files direct to the SD card

I parse the XML into the underlying SQLite database. I suppose you are right.. in Theory You might be able to do something like you state but I've not investigated the Plugin API yet.. and probably wont to be honest.

I wanted something where I could keep a searchable copy of my db to hand, give me info about my collection and allow me to cheat at pub quizzes.. (erm did I say that out loud?)

when I maintain my collection I do it on my PC. I used to use a PHP webpage based loosely on the phpdvdprofiler stuff found elsewhere on this fine forum but that was only of any use when I had a decent signal. In the basement of some entertainment super store, browsing the DVD's surrounded by strip lights, TV's, metal work, etc etc etc signals were not always to hand

it was never meant to be a commercial app.. it was a tool I wrote for myself to fulfil as specific purpose.  But as I noticed more demand for similar I decided to round it out a bit and squish some of the larger bugs

I could always write the data back to XML as you say.. I doubt I'll get round to ever doing a plug in but I'll leave the option open for any other developers out there. Personally this isn't a feature I'd use/require but understand other users milage may vary.

I agree, it's time for an on the go option besides windows mobile.  Not only to make sure that duplicates aren't purchased while out shopping; but also to avoid having to print out the movie list so frequently.  To be able to browse one's collection from the phone without having to power up the computer would be great. At the very least, if not an app then a mobile web version of the website.  The data is already backed up on the website, make it interactive like the program is.

It's taken  close to 4 years for a iOS version, how long do you think a Android version will take?  On a Platform that so far has a poor record for paying for Apps?  If anything I think a WM7 version will be released first because I would think a lot of the work has been done and it's a platform that's pretty familiar with.  With only 1 programmer doing the PC software the older Windows Mobile software, the iOS version, where is the time to do Android?  Where's the Incentive?  It's also so fragmented, not in just the Android OS versions, but in the Hardware being used.  Keyboard/No keyboard, different screen sizes, a usable GPU?    Even a lot of those newer Android phones can't even handle a simple game.  So you release on Android, Half or more of your program gets Pirated, and a percentage that want to pay for it and use it, it doesn't work very good on their phone.    Maybe in a couple years things will be different.  Maybe Google getting a little better control over Android for the better.

If anything I think someone in time will write a App for Android to use the Database just like has been done for iOS.  It'll be crude, but at least you'll have your Database with you!

The iPhone SDK was not first released until March 2008.  So, not even 3 years! So fast!

which is half the problem I'm having. Ran my prototype app on my new Desire HD.. had a desire before and it ran well so "assumed" (foolishly) that the Desire HD would be ok. despite having the same screen resolution ( 480 X 800 WVGA ) it looked fugly on the HD !! I dread to think how it would look on a tablet or otherwise.

it is in progress (albeit slow progress) it's not as functional as the official windows mobile version but hopefully give search and filter capabilities and lookup features to render it a useful addition to the DVDphile's batbelt (I'm even working on the bizarre inclusion of the "Guess my DVD" game that came with the official version ok so it doesn't ADD anything useful.. but we all have those "need to kill 5 mins" moments when starting a new Level in Angry birds won't do !! haha)

Well your Android version already sounds better then the 3rd party iOS version I've been using!  This is really what it's going to take is one or more 3rd party Programmers to make the software if you expect anything any time soon.  If you make a good version and sell it for cheap, hell you have at least a few years before I would expect a Official one from here.  A Database program should be less of a problem on the Android then a GAME, but I think it's still a issue and you'll have people asking for it to work on their such and such Android phone over and over again.  Google really needs to do a few things like set Minimum Standards!  It's going to be at a Disadvantage and greatly fragmented over that of iOS and WM7.
I think you'll have a happy Android group to at least have something, and it sounds like it'll be quite good.  I've used the Windows Mobile version and like it.  If your doing something similar to that, GREAT!!!

I would also LOVE to have an Android version of DVDprofiler. It would be an better better fit if the mobile version could use the built-in camera as a barcode scanner. That would be a killer app!
