Actually, quite a lot on LP - I admit it is a specialist market, but most bands/artists still release Vinyl for the collectors market.
But, I agree with your comments, just wanted to be pedantic

"Quite a lot.".. about as many titles (and quantities of each title) of vinyl to CDs as HD discs to DVDs. There are some, but compared to the mainstream sales of standard CDs, it's not even a ripple on a calm sea.

My point, exactly.
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

If I buy a Blu-Ray burner for my Computer... and I transfer my daughter's ice skating competition tapes to it, and burn at least 880 copies... and I sell them (I have a retail license) all in a week (and we have far more than 880 friends, relatives, coworkers and fellow ice skaters who would buy one)...

It would become among the top 10 selling HD discs that week.

Because it takes far less than 1000 sold discs to be among the Blu-Ray/HD DVD top 10 sellers in a week.

If you could do that, it would be amazing!  That would also be a nice profit for you (depending on how much you sold it for).  Then of course, you would have to do it again the next week and the next, and the next, and I think you get my point.

The argument that either format is "winning" is like arguing that a mosquito landing on Lake Erie contributes significantly to the lake's pollution.

Just wondering how a format "winning" or losing ties into a mosquito landing on Lake Erie and contributions to lake pollution.  Please break that down for me.

Quote:
You cite numbers of Blu-Ray discs delivered to retailers and discounters, yet, we know this proves nothing, as the massive shipment of the soundtrack LP for "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" proved. Retailers shipped back more than 95% of the discs they received, unsold. I'm certain Blu-Ray "Casino Royale" will have a higher percentage of its numbers sold, but shipped to dealers and sold are not even close to being the same thing. How many DVDs (non-Blu-Ray) of "Casino Royale" shipped?

See...citing DVD is doing this and DVD is doing that brings the history of DVD into the argument.  Citing where DVD is now means it had to come from somewhere.  That means it has an origin.  Without understanding this first, you will never understand the "100,000 copies of a title shipped" concept.  According to various sources, DVD was the fastest growing format ever.  So DVD, being the fastest growing format ever, SHIPPED 100,000 copies of a title 11 months after launching.  Blu-ray accomplished this very same task in 9 months.  Logically, that should tell you Blu-ray is on track to becoming the fastest growing format ever.  Could that change in the future?  Of course it could!  But, for now, Blu-ray is ahead of DVD's timeline.  And, there is nothing meaningless about that.

Quote:
But less than 1% of the market is shared by Blu-Ray and HD DVD.

Please try to remember the context.  Fair and accurate time comparisons are what's relevant.  The fact is that if Blu-ray continues to meet or beat DVD's timeline, it WILL be the next format.  HD DVD still has yet to accomplish anything on DVD's time scale except launch.  I has already failed to meet the 100,000 copies of a title shipped milestone within the allotted time period.  HD DVD's anniversary is in 3 days.  I'm not sure that they will ship 100,000 copies of "The Matrix Collection" in a month.  If they don't, this will be very, very sad indeed for the format.

Quote:
Which is far less popular than prerecorded cassettes were (or vinyl LPs) in the 10th year of CDs. How many new prerecorded music cassettes and LPs do you see in music retailers today?

This is not relevant to video formats.

Quote:
Beta had a lot larger percentage of the home video market when Sony quit making the recorders...

Beta had a lot larger percentage of the home market than when that started.  That's definitely not saying much.  There were also not exclusives in that format battle until the porn industry joined the mix.  And, since just about the only way a get porn at the time was through VHS, it ended that format war.  So, Sony quit making their BETAMAX player/recorder for consumers.

Quote:
You may be right, Blu-Ray might win. But you know, HD DVD might, too.

This is true.  But, based on what is known, which is most likely to win?

Quote:
But I still think a non-mechanical delivery device has a better chance of winning than either of these methods. When Radio Shack retails a 2 GB SD memory card for $29.99, the thought that a non-recordable memory card with an HD film on it could be sold for $20 to $30 doesn't seem too far away. And my 3-year-old HD TV has memory card slots in the front... how much software updating would it take to play a prerecorded SD, CF, MMS, XC, or other card in my TV with no external player?

This could be practical in the decade or two.  But, within the next two decades, what will be the next size of movies then?  At the current rate of SD, CF, MMS, XC card size growth, this means is unlikely (but possible).

Quote:
I'm not buying either a Blu-Ray or HD DVD player anytime soon.

That is definitely your choice.  Personally, I'm enjoying the Blu-ray format greatly and will probably enjoy it for at least an additional 10 years.  As far as me not having major studios exclusive HD DVD titles...it's not bad at all.  I will only be missing under 12.5% of the total HD titles available.

Don't worry, I will enjoy all this great HD for those that aren't ready for it!

True.  But if HD DVD is no longer around or near death, you just flushed $12 per title down the toilet!

I have also realized that neither format (HD DVD or Blu-ray) has enough titles out that I am interested in buying anyways.  And by the time they have the movies out I want, I can afford a player and the HD TV to make it even worth buying, my grandkids will be arguing about what virtual reality format is better

I guess if you keep saying it, you will make it true.  That is your intent, correct?

What information have you contributed to this thread?  The only thing you seem to contribute to this thread is heckling.  You seem to be nothing more than an instigator in this thread.  I guess some people will choose to fall for that ploy.

I guess I'm really asking you to prove me wrong.  Please contribute some Blu-ray or HD DVD related facts or opinions backed up by something.  You and the blah, blah guy.

MS Mugged Over VC-1 Codec...

The following is just an excerpt.

Quote:
So after all this time the two technologies, considered by many so similar as to be identical, now cost virtually the same to license as one another, much to the chagrin of Microsoft’s and contradicting its earlier statements. The intervening period of uncertainty has pretty much left VC-1 encoding only scarcely used, except a little on the web, with the exception of its use as an option in both High Definition DVD standards HD DVD and Blu-ray. But this only came about as a snub to the MPEG4/H.264 license, which at the time was thought to be too expensive.

Didn't Amir hint that VC-1 was better than AVC?  Supposedly, MS created and are perfecting VC-1.  Didn't he say they are continuing to push VC-1's bitrates further and further down beyond AVC?  If the two codecs are basically identical, how can that be possible?  It seems the Sony has more patent rights to VC-1 than MS does.

This is kind of like the HD DVD group saying it is sooo much more expensive to make Blu-ray discs when the costs seem to be similar.

HD DVD's organized "buy" days has successfully created a spike in Amazon.com sales

The organized buy has temporarily pushed Planet Earth in the top 5 sales and boosted all the HD DVD sales up past Blu-ray on Amazon.

Congrats!

I believe Blu-ray's year-to-date total discs sold number vs. HD DVD should be about double or more by June at the current rate.

And, once again to put that pie chart in perspective, comparing HD DVD & Blu-Ray sales in comparision to the entire market:

See that red slice at the top? That's HD DVD.

See that cyan slice at the top, just to the right of the magena slice? That's Blu-Ray.

See the yellow (with the red and the cyan)? That's the entire market.

See how obvious Blu-Ray is trouncing HD DVD?

No?

Oh....

WTF AsC?  Buying a combo HD+DVD yesterday, today or tomorrow is NOT flushing anything.
If you have a HD DVD player or HD / Blu-ray combo player, the discs will be good for a long time.

Do you think at all before you set your droning fingers to type the same thing over and over?
