I agree with Calidain, the article is patently anti-Microsoft. But that doesn't make me anti-Sony.
I'm guessing that the truth is probably half-way between those blaming Microsoft and those blaming Sony.
After all, the article states that Sony and Philips worked together on DVD so why, when the Forum chose AOD as the next format, did Sony not work with Toshiba on developing that technology instead of going off on their own? Simple answer, they wanted a bigger bite of the market, same as Microsoft. Most major corporations these days seem hellbent on dominating whichever market they're in, trashing the competition as much as they can. This is only bad for the consumer, but it's obvious that the major companies involved in this battle are pretty much unconcerned about that.

a well written fact laden article.

The article is complete and utter garbage. The "writer" is an "Apple is great, Down with Microsoft" internet retard, he doesn't have a clue about the HD formats, he has just researched Apple and Microsoft's development of video codecs and spun them into a tedious stream of drivel for people like you and Assended Saiyain to touch yourselves to. There are thousands of "articles" like this in the blogosphere, ever wondered why none of these people have actual jobs writing for intelligent publications? Here's a clue, it's because they can't write.

Not a microsoft fan at all, nor am I a sony fan, I see both as two-sides of the same evil coin.  My comment isn't just based on a Bill Hunt quote, the fact remains that the article is clearly meant to work on the anti-microsoft sentiment to drum up some Blu-Ray support and to cast microsoft as the true purveyor of the entire format war!!!  It is an extremely biased article and therefore holds little to no merit in my opinion.

The first picture, with the Microsoft logo on the Borg Cube destroying the planet, should have been the first clue that this was an 'anti-Microsoft' article.

HD (and BR) madness has now reached our small European kingdom of the Netherlands... Albeit not the sub-100 USD prices from across the pond, prices have been lowered AND a sizable disc-pack has been thrown in the mix. Actually, factoring in the disc retail prices, a number of players are basically given away for free.

My local Maastricht Mediamarkt starts by throwing 8 high def discs in, regardless whether a HD or a BR player is being bought: Saw, Lord of War, Reservoir dogs, 16 blocks, Running Scared, Underworld, Flyboys & Amazing planet.
It may not be the best collection ever, but hey, as the Dutch saying goes, if you get a horse as a gift, you do not look into the mouth.

The cheapest HD player is the Toshiba HD-EP10 at 299 euro (all prices incl sales tax/BTW/VAT/MWSt whatever you call it) and Toshiba throws in (on top) 300, World Trade Center, The Prestige, Black Rain and Dreamgirls.

The cheapest BR player is the Sony BDP300B at 499 euro. Sony throws in on top Spider-man I, II & III and Pirates of the Caribean I, II & III. Actually, a few pages on in the brochure the PS3 lists cheaper at 388 euro (presumably the 40GB) but no mention of movies there; it is in the game section.

More expensive models too, both HD and BR, Samsung, Sharp, Panasonic (the BR and HD combo at 799), LG and Pioneer, but not every model has discs thrown in on top of the initial 8.

Of course, other shops will probably follow suit and of course, prices may even improve.

Just thought I'd let you know...
Eric

That seems a little uncalled for.  Do you have something to base this assessment on?  It's one thing to support your format of choice.  But I don't see any reason for this kind of bashing.

And I'll acknowledge my hypocrisy ahead of time with some of the comments I've made about Bill Hunt.  My comments were just as uncalled for as the above comment.

And this was called for?

"into a tedious stream of drivel for people like you and Assended Saiyain to touch yourselves to. "

I posted a link to a factual article. It had links to other sources and everything, then I am bashed for my opinion in these forums.

Maybe this thread should be closed.

Couldn't give a damn what Amir says, couldn't give a damn if people insult Microsoft, They aren't my precious, I own an apple powerbook, windows pcs, a dell monitor,  an xbox 360, a playstation 3, an apple ipod, a sony psp, a panasonic tv, a pioneer dvd player, a denon amplifier, kef speakers, a paradigm subwoofer, a nikon slr, you figured it out yet? I buy products on their own merits regardless of brand. I don't care what company makes the products i buy, as long as its a decent product.

But I just hate idiotic, biased drivel like this and it insults my intelligence to read it. It insults me even more to hear people pompously proclaim this garbage as "factual well written articles" and I wont ignore it. If you are going to post and praise crap, prepare to have crap flung back at you.

I'll admit to just skimming through most of the posts, but I'm not seeing the connection between what stefc said and you calling Amir a loser.  If there's a connection, then what is it?  If you're bashing Amir because of someone else bashed you, then I stand by my statements.  He's not even here (though he is a regisitered member) to defend himself.

With the proper blocking of users, this thread isn't entirely useless.  It's where I first heard of the PS3 sale over the weekend for example.  Maybe instead of closing the thread, people should stop getting so personal and stop attacking each other over a movie playing machine.

That will never happen as someone will post something, then someone comes along and bashes them for posting it.

Or, you're accused of "touching yourself" over something that you post.

I was offended by being grouped with A_S.

I admit, the Amir is a loser crack should not have been made, although, in my opinion it's a true statement, but that is ntiehr here nor there.

I personally have never grouped you (pplchamp) with A_S ever in any post of mine, however, I agree with stefc that the article is clearly biased drivel, hardly factual intelligent writing!!!

I will say that I too cannot stand people who become so maliscious toward companies like Microsoft, as if Bill Gates himself murdered their parents and forced them to witness the slaughter as young children.  This form of fanatical hatred or fanatical fan boyism toward companies like Apple, Sony, and Microsoft is akin to cult worship and evangelism!!!

I personally believe there are far too many people (at least 1 person here who shall remain unamed) on the web today who get overzealously caught up in the entire format war, whether it is PC vs. Mac or Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD!!!

In summary, the article you linked is simply one persons own form of cool-aid that I personally aint about to swallow!!!

Calling someone who is upper management in one of the most powerful companies in the world a "loser" hardly seems accurate either.  If he's a loser, what the hell do you do in your day job?

I've met the guy and he's very knowledgable and nice.  Is he going to push HD DVD and talk down about Blu-ray?  Of course.  That (was) kind of his job.  Just as I wouldn't expect a high ranking individual on the Blu-ray side to praise HD DVD.  I'm not sure how that qualifies him as a loser.  I'd love to hear Erik's thoughts on this if he's so inclined to share.
