| Posted: | | | | Right now, we have three fields: First name, Middle name, Last name
These fields right now are 'some kind of local' as they will be downloaded only the first time and NOT be changed if they differ in another DVD profile.
My suggestion is to replace them by two fields: Name, Sort name
Name will be global, Sort name will be local only. | | | |

--------------- At least we both agree that it would be very nice if Ken could drop comment or two to steer the conversation. |

Name will be global, Sort name will be local only. So if I understand correctly, instead of three name fields we would have five. Two of the parsed from three existing? How would this help link "Ki-duk Kim" and "Kim Ki-duk"? |

| Posted: | | | | I could be mistaken... but the way I am reading him is there will be 2 fields total... one field (like the Credited As field) where you copy the name exactly as you see it in the credits... this being the one that gets uploaded to the main database. And one field local only where you determine how you would want to sort the name... Say Eastwood, Clint if you want to sort by last name or Clint Eastwood if you want to sort by first name.
That is how I am reading this at least. | | | Pete |

| Posted: | | | | No, we would have two fields. I'll give you an example:
You have two people in your database: José / / de Souza Melo Junior Clarice / Plasteig dit / Caffou
These will be converted into one field having the full name: José de Souza Melo Junior Clarice Plasteig dit Caffou
This field is stored in the global database.
Then a second field (sort name) will be filled with last name first: de Souza Melo Junior, José Caffou, Clarice Plasteig dit
This field might be filled wrong, if parsing in your old database was wrong - but if you're not interested now in correct parsing, I guess you won't be in a future version. This field is local only.
After creating these two fields the old fields (first name, middle name & last name) will be deleted as they won't be used any further.
Now you buy a new movie and download its profile. When downloaded DVDP will detect a person which isn't in your current database:
Ki-duk Kim (credited as Kim Ki-duk)
The full name field gets filled automatically: Ki-duk Kim <= as this is his common name
To fill it's sort name field you'll be prompted an auto-suggested sort name: Kim, Ki-duk
Now you can decide, accept or change this.
If you're completely uninterested in sort names, you can optionally skip this prompt and the suggested version will be taken for sort name automatically. | | | |

| Posted: | | | | So, to be short and simple...
You are proposing single name field with local "Sort as" field.
The rest of your text was just how the conversion from present to that solution should be made?
I'm OK with that, since it's basically single name field (which I been asking) + local sort field (which I wouldn't personally never use). | | | Last edited: by Kulju |
