FYI, recently Future Shop up here put the HD-A2 on sale for a ridiculous $199 (about $204 USD ) . Needless to say is sold out accross Canada in literally minutes. The spillover seems to have caught even the A20 which sold out the next day even though it was still above $400. Sony should take note. I would sure as heck buy a Blu Ray machine if it dropped into the $200 range.

Hell, I might even go to the dark side if BD players were to drop that low sometime soon. In the meantime I just got my HD A30 delivered so I'll be good for a while...

Not bad, but does it still come with 5 free HD-DVD's?

DVD Forum closer to approving 51GB HD DVD

By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 10/4/2007

http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6487214.html

OCT. 4 | A working group within the DVD Forum has approved the specification for a triple-layer 51GB HD DVD, confirmed a spokesperson for the North American HD DVD Promotion Group, although final approval within the organization is still pending.

The spokesman said that once the spec is finalized, compatibility with current HD DVD player and recorders can be investigated, which opens the door for the format to be competitive with Blu-ray Disc's highest-capacity 50GB disc.

After the Forum gives the final blessing, replicators will start producing 51GB HD DVD discs, which include three layers holding 17GB capacity each. Production should drive manufacturers to begin testing how existing HD DVD players and drives can playback such the new discs.

No studio has announced plans to release a 51GB HD DVD, which was first announced as a developing technology during January’s CES. However, HD DVD backers will likely use the ability to create such high-capacity discs as ammunition in the format war.

Many Blu-ray supporters have pointed to their own 50GB BD releases as a competitive advantage to HD DVD, which to date has generated 15GB and 30GB discs. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Oct. 30 BD release of Spider-Man 3 is among upcoming Blu-ray titles containing 50GB discs.

With the whole Universal/Spielberg thing...Don't you think that any statement release on Spielberg's part would be through more "official" channels...I mean, blu-ray.com....? You know, the site that isn't affiliated with BDA...I mean, I might be wrong but I'd hope he'd be a little more selective than releasing press releases to what amounts to a fan-site...

Not necessarily, Michael Bay's outburst against Paramount was done outside of the main channels. I think it was his blog or forums or summat.

It wasn't a press release, they called the spokesperson for Speilberg.

Universal Japan prematurely touts Spielberg HD-DVD
Just a quick note to put a kibosh on some news that circulated online this weekend: An image from a presentation held by Universal Japan has been lighting up the Internet with talk of some major Spielberg films coming to HD-DVD, top-tier titles such as “Jaws,” “E.T.,” “Jurassic Park” and more.

Thing is, all of this is news to Amblin/DreamWorks who have a say in the format and issuance of Spielberg’s work on any home video format. Unfortunately, this is the second time in less than six-months that the very anxious HD-DVD group (of which Universal is a very key member when it comes to software content) have prematurely announced Spielberg titles coming to HD-DVD.

At this time, there are no official plans to release any Spielberg-directed titles to the HD DVD format, except for tomorrow’s release of “Twilight Zone The Movie” (a feature that includes the short Spielberg film “Kick the Can”).

Beyond “Twilight Zone” (that will be released in both HD-DVD and Blu-ray), Spielberg fans have November 13th’s high-def debut of “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” to look forward to exclusively on the Blu-ray format. Beyond that, any other talk of Spielberg films on high-def at this time is premature, no matter the source, even Universal.

Ok, press release or just a statement, I would think it would be a little more official. Even the spielbergfilms.com is just a fan site, like blu-ray.com.

Michael Bay's outburst was on his own website, there is nothing to confuse about whether or not that was him. It was. What he posts there I think we can take as official...

I find it odd that Spielberg won't allow films he directed to be exclusive to HD but he has no problem allowing that for films he produced.  Seems he would have more control over the latter.

Lionsgate Declares 'War' on Blu-ray

In the studio's first next-gen title announcement of the new year, Lionsgate will debut the high-octane action-thriller 'War' on Blu-ray this January.

Starring Jet Li as a rogue assassin and Jason Statham as the FBI assigned to track him down, expect lots of flexing muscles and slow-mo body blows when 'War' drops on Blu-ray and standard-def DVD day-and-date on January 1.

Tech specs for the $32 million-grossing slugfest include 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video, and in what is becoming a much-welcome trend on Lionsgate's Blu-ray releases, an uncompressed PCM track in full-blown 7.1 surround.

Supplement details have not yet been announced, but watch this space and we'll keep you posted.

Lionsgate has set a $39.99 MSRP for the Blu-ray version.

Spielberg Movies Still Not Coming to HD DVD

Author: ERIK GRUENWEDEL

A spokesperson for the HD DVD Promotions Group Oct. 8 confirmed that an erroneous slide presentation by Universal Studios Japan at last weekend’s CEATAC confab indicating the forthcoming releases of Steven Spielberg classics Jaws, E.T., Jurassic Park and Close Encounters of Third Kind on HD DVD from Universal Studios Home Entertainment was false.

In January, the HD DVD Promotions Group was forced to issue an apology to USHE and Spielberg when it inadvertently announced on its Web site the pending HD DVD releases of Jaws, E.T. and Jurassic Park.

In a statement from USHE, the studio said reports coming out of Japan relating to Steven Spielberg titles being released on HD DVD were inaccurate.

“Universal has not made any formal announcements regarding Spielberg catalog titles coming to HD DVD at this time,” the studio said.

I know this part.  I just find it odd that movies he directed are not going to be released on HD while, at least, one film he produced will be.  In fact, it will be released on the 16th.  I would have thought he had more control over movies he produced.
