New 'Shrek' Specs Promise Several HD DVD Firsts

Final specs are in for the highly-anticipated HD DVD debut of 'Shrek the Third,' including word of a first-ever branching PIP commentary and the most comprehensive web-enabled content yet.

Although DreamWorks Animation already announced most of the specs for the 'Shrek the Third' HD DVD earlier this month, now they've issued an even more comprehensive rundown of the disc's contents.

Expanding upon the picture-in-picture video commentary feature found on other HD DVDs, the "Animator's Reel" will not only present an entire alternate version of the film in storyboard form, but it will further utilize the format's HDi technology to offer a "contextual seamless branch" to lost scenes and other content.

'Shrek the Third' is also set to push the boundaries in terms of what's been offered as web-enabled content on previous HD DVD releases. DreamWorks says a number of additional exclusive features will be made available for download the day the disc hits stores, including a full-length subtitle trivia track, a movie guide with files on characters and talent in the film, plus an interactive coloring book feature that allows you to digitally paint your favorite scenes.

As previously announced, the disc will also provide users the ability to customize their own menus based on famous 'Shrek' characters. Once customized, the user's menu will become the default menu for the disc, even after it has been ejected from the player.

Additional features identical to the standard DVD edition of the film are set to include audio commentary, multiple making-of featurettes, deleted scenes sand more.

DreamWorks has set a $39.98 MSRP for the HD DVD.

In all honesty and seriousness though I think that both BD and HD are much better than VHS.

So, an exec of a large company backing Blu-ray is predicting that HD DVD will die?

Say it isn't so.

So, in three months or so Blu-ray will do what it has failed to do in the last 18 months...And this guy is an executive officer...I must rule the world.

Hitachi Develops 100GB Blu-ray Disc

It's not ready for primetime quite yet, but Hitachi says it has developed a Blu-ray disc with twice the storage capacity of a BD-50 disc.

Although other companies (including TDK and Panasonic) have developed similar prototypes, each have required a specially developed optical head in the player to read the disc.

By contrast, Hitachi's new four layer disc is believed to require only a firmware update to be compatible with existing drives.

According to a report from PC Pro, the manufacturer is working to stabilize signal quality before considering a commercial roll-out for the new discs.

Like the 51 GB HD DVD disc currently in development by Toshiba, it's expected that if Hitachi's 100 GB Blu-ray discs do hit the market, it will be for data storage use to begin with (and not movies).

PC Pro reports that Hitachi is also developing an eight layer disc that would hold 200GB of data.

Sony to Unleash 'Godzilla' on Blu-ray in 2008

In a very early announcement, Sony has confirmed that the 1998 incarnation of 'Godzilla' will stomp his way to Blu-ray this coming March in a special "Monster Edition" boasting brand-new bonus features.

Hatched from the minds of 'Independence Day' creators Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, 'Godzilla' was not the instant blockbuster that many predicted, but it do go on to gross over $300 million worldwide and has enjoyed a healthy afterlife on DVD (largely due to its demo-ready scenes of Godzilla laying waste to New York City).

Now, Sony is preparing to drop a new "Monster Edition" DVD re-issue for March 28, which the studio has confirmed will be released on Blu-ray day-and-date.

Sporting remastered picture and sound, tech specs for the Blu-ray include 1080p video (codec TBA) and uncompressed PCM 5.1 Surround audio.

Extras planned for both the Blu-ray and DVD versions will be the "Behind the Scenes of Godzilla with Charles Caiman" featurette, an "All Time Best Of Godzilla Fight Scenes" montage, a "Heroes" music video by The Wallflowers, and more to be announced in the coming months.

Sony has not yet announced an MSRP for 'Godzilla,' but we'll keep you posted.

New Line to bring Pan's Labyrinth to Blu-ray

New Line Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the critically acclaimed film 'Pan's Labyrinth' to Blu-ray on December 26th. Video will be presented in 1.85:1 1080p, with Spanish 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio (with optional English subtitles). Extras include enhanced video commentary and everything from the 2-disc DVD release.

Following a bloody civil war, young Ofelia enters a world of unimaginable cruelty when she moves in with her new stepfather, a tyrannical military officer. Armed with only her imagination, Ofelia discovers a mysterious labyrinth and meets a faun who sets her on a path to saving herself and her ailing mother. But soon, the lines between fantasy and reality begin to blur, and before Ofelia can turn back, she finds herself at the center of a ferocious battle between good and evil.
