| Posted: | | | | Myself, I didn't read it because I knew about aspect ratios and I was currently in a phase where I only read certain topics. I passed that phase but still didn't read it because I didn't want to read through five pages of stuff. When it hit 7 pages, I figured it wasn't worth reading because a fight broke out. When it hit 10 pages, my morbid sense of curiosity took over and I clicked on the link.
I read a few pages, skipped to the end, saw the post about watching a movie over composite video and my brain kinda froze. It was just too much! |

Quote: widescreenforever: I have sent off a support ticket Cyberlink outlining this very question.,, as my toolkit area for the player has no such feature ..
My response back from Cyberlink today: Dear Terry, Thank you for contacting CyberLink Technical Support. In response to your concern, please note that the PowerDVD software supports the playback of both Anamorphic and Non-anamorphic DVDs. However, the aspect ratio displayed on your monitor depends upon the the original aspect ratio of your monitor and the display detting selected by you in PowerDVD. When you right click the PowerDVD screen during the DVD playback, it provides you following options for selecting the aspect ratio : - Keep aspect ratio (To play the DVD in the same aspect ratio in which your movie is on the DVD i.e, 4:3 or 16:9) - Stretch to fit the screen (To override the original aspect ratio of video on the DVD in order to fit the screen irrespective of the DVDs original aspect ratio) end quote" My setup is set for aspect ratio is turned on .or keep aspect ratio . So if I use a 4:3 monitor and want to do a true pixel count how accurate is it?? | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. | Posted: | | | | It's accurate all the time the Keep Aspect Ratio option is ticked. The only thing you need to do is to crop any black bars. Of course with that you might be a few pixels out but the overall result should get you to the correct answer. |

| Posted: | | | | That may be how your player is hooked up - it's just that this is the type of connection that delivers the worst possible quality... You might want to check if player and TV support a so-called component connection. Here you can see what this type of connection looks like (bottom image). If player and TV support it, I would recommend getting yourself a component cable (the link I gave shows you what they look like) and hook your gear up that way. Leave the existing red and white cables in place (they handle the sound), remove the yellow one. You might have to adjust the settings of your DVD player to get it to output a component signal. You may also have to choose a different signal source on your TV. But it SHOULD give you better picture quality. I reckon that player and TV are somewhat older. If however - contrary to what I would expect - both are able to handle an HDMI connection, that would be the best option. You would then only need one single HDMI cable. Get a cheap one on-line, rather than spending loads of money on one of those heavily overpriced cables you'll find in electronics stores. You may have to adjust settings on player and TV to use HDMI, much like for a component cable. HDMI may however not be an option for your equipment, component might though. | | | Last edited: by dee1959jay |

Years ago after I found out about what overscan was I researched my equipment and built a system that wouldn't "overzoom" the image. As for the purpose...if this isn't the tread to ask the minute questions on what is lost in aspect changes where else do you think I should ask? I've actually wonder about what a studio does with an OAR 1.37 film, do they barely crop it, squeeze it or release it in 1.37 and call it 1.33? |

You're assuming I'm missing information due to overscan, I'm not. That's not what your fellow doctor said. Quote: As for the purpose...if this isn't the tread to ask the minute questions on what is lost in aspect changes where else do you think I should ask? Originally this thread was about a certain contribution involving "enhanced" widescreen. Quote: I've actually wonder about what a studio does with an OAR 1.37 film, do they barely crop it, squeeze it or release it in 1.37 and call it 1.33? That's an interesting question. Unfortunately I don't know the answer to it. |
