| Posted: | | | | Quoting northbloke: Quote: I brought the incident in Finland to your attention because you may not have been aware of what had happened when posting the video. Also the reason I didn't immediately give a red arrow. I felt a red arrow was unjustified if the case had been you were ignorant of the tragedy. I simply wanted you to be aware that in the context of the Finnish shootings, your video may upset people. You have to remember there are quite a few Finnish users who frequent the forums. You're the one who linked them when you said it "reinforced" your point. So you have made it clear you were aware of the shootings and posted this video about gun control anyway. Regardless of my beliefs about the subject matter of the video, in this context I found the posting of it only a day after such a massacre in very bad taste and I used the reputation system accordingly to show this. You could have dealt with this in a number of ways: yes, you could have removed the video and maybe posted it again in a few weeks. But you could equally have simply added a disclaimer to your post making people more aware of the subject matter and content of the video, and that it wasn't related to the events in Finland. Instead you chose to stand your ground and accuse someone who tried to make you aware that your post could be upsetting to some people as "censorship". Being aware of something and linking it to the posting of the video are two different things. I made it clear in my second comment that I did know about the incident in Finland but did not even think about it when I posted the video. So your position is that if I didn't know about the incident and had posted, then it would have been OK and no red zinger. But because I knew about Finland and posted the video then it was distasteful even though I did not associate the two at all. Furthermore, since you expressed your concern that someone might be offended and I essentially ignored your concern, that justifies a red zinger for the video, which had not changed in the least from the beginning. Are you denying that you expected me to remove the video once you brought up the Finland incident? And that when I did not acquiesce, you then gave the red zinger as punishment for not taking it down. I do not believe that was the intent of the reputation system, at all. The video could not be any more or any less 'distasteful' before or after your protestations. It never changed and it has nothing to do with Finland, in spite of your attempt to link them in your very first post after the video post. | | | Hal | | | Last edited: by hal9g |

And that when I did not acquiesce, you then gave the red zinger as punishment for not taking it down. Are you even bothering to read my posts? In my opinion, posting a gun-control video - especially such an inflammatory one - only a day after a mass-shooting in Finland deserved a red arrow. However I felt in unfair to give one immediately if you had posted in ignorance. So I waited until you clarified your position and/or amended your post. Not necessarily remove, amend. |

| Posted: | | | | It is unfortunate that you find it necessary to inject emotion and political correctness into the discussion.
The fact that I did not amend the original post, which BTW, included no comment by me whatsoever, is a reason to give out negative feedback?
I did not do what you believe would have been politically correct...that's the bottom line. | | | Hal | | | Last edited: by hal9g |

| Posted: | | | | If you can't see how posting a gun control video the day after a mass killing at a college could be considered grossly insensitive then I'm wasting my time discussing it with you. It's nothing to do with political correctness in any way. |

It's nothing to do with political correctness in any way. Since one has absolutely nothing to do with the other the insensitivity is your perception, not mine. The fact that you made a link between the two that I never intended, does not mean that one actually exists. | | | Hal | | | Last edited: by hal9g |

| Posted: | | | | My take: The video and the Finland incident are unrelated. Just because both incidents happen to involve guns doesn't make one insensitive to the other. Another point of view: Animal shelters put down hundreds of animals every single day, if not thousands. That doesn't stop anybody from posting a photo of a cat in the LOLCat forum or the thousands of photos on icanhascheezburger.com. Another point of view: 9/11. Arguably the worst terrorist attack on American soil. Even though every flight in the USA was grounded, that didn't stop airlines from advertising. Another point of view: Every year or so, California has a very nasty car accident due to heavy fog. Last one I recall reading about involved over 40 cars. People DIED! I don't think anyone thought anything was wrong with watching auto commercials. Please note that the should be used to flag posts that break forum rules. You shouldn't give one because you just so happen to disagree with the video. Since you wouldn't have given him a red arrow a month ago if he had posted it then or a couple months from now (baring any other massacres), you really shouldn't give him one now. BTW - You should be posting YouTube videos with your posts. | | | Last edited: by Dr. Killpatient |
