It's an electronic device, wow. Find it from the main page and you go through the link titled "Video Games" under the "Consumer Electronics" header. Show me where it's listed as a BD player. Hmmm, it's not there! I never said it wasn't a consumer electronics device...Thanks for the info though, confirmed what I believed all along. Gaming consoles are indeed electronic products...

I have to admit, that confused me too. Of course the PS3 is an electronic device - so's the Xbox 360 - that's also listed under electronics.
But it isn't listed under blu-ray players, just as the Xbox add-on isn't listed under HD-DVD players.

And I can't say for certain, but there's always the possibility that Unicus never saw A_S's reply for some strange, new, recently introduced, reason

I believe what was said is that A_S doesn't want to admit WHY Sony wants the PS3 classified as a BD player. It leads to a higher sales number that in reality doesn't exist. Without PS3 BD players are behind HD, and if you include the X360 HD still leads. The only way you can make BD take the lead is by not including the add-on and counting the PS3.

Sorry, I should have been clearer, I meant that pplchamp's post confused me. I didn't understand the relevance of the Amazon thing. I do now though

Try this....

Search amazon for Blu-ray

Click on Electronis, sort by price high to low.

What is item #20?

Ok, it's a remote control. Granted, for the PS3 but it's a remote control.

Actually, sort high to low... not low to high. It should be a $700+ PS3 bundle.

btw, I have no point for this

Yeah, and?
Search for HD-DVD and you get the Xbox add-on.
The point I think they're trying to make is: out of all the PS3s sold, how much of a percentage can you honestly say were sold solely to play bluray movies? I'm sure there'll be some, but it won't be a very high percentage.

Edit (clicked submit too early): And so it seems very unfair to include the numbers of gaming consoles sold to bluray players when only a small percentage of those consoles are being used for that purpose.

thanks northbloke, I think you got the idea. The PS3, through normal menu navigation is listed under video games, not DVD or BD players.

However, the smart consumer out to purchase a BR player should be looking at the PS3 first. The main reason I bought it was the price drop, then because it played BR movies, then for the games that are now starting to appear.

I have two PS3 games, one ordered.

I have 40+ BR movies with a dozen or so ordered. I guess I would be the "smart BR comsumer".

You're right, a smart consumer should...

However, I don't know if you have, but I've worked in a shop, and smart consumers are not that plentiful - especially when it comes to audio & video electronics!

I looked at Amazon sales figures for players and they seem to demonstrate that BD players are not selling nearly as well as HD players. I fact, all three second gen HD players are in the top 50 in overall consumer electronics sales, while the first BD player comes in at around 60. In DVD player sales alone it was a HD machine that ranked #1.

A_S probably won't admit it but, this is the reason they want the PS3 classified as a Blu-ray player.  Without those numbers, HD DVD has the edge in stand alone player sales.

I have looked into HiDef players at my local electronics stores...Best Buy, Circuit City, Target, etc...not a single sales person has pointed me towards a PS3.

If you read A_S reply, he said what you said he probably would not admit.

If you took out the HD DVD add-on and the PS3 sales, I believe HD DVD would be on top.

Yes, he admits that if they took out the PS3 numbers, HD DVD would be on top.  However, he doesn't believe those numbers should be taken out.  Neither does Sony.  Why?  Because they don't want to admit that they need those numbers in there to fuel their propoganda machine.

I don't think anybody is arguing the fact that the PS3 is a good Blu-ray player.  I certainly am not.  What we are saying, well what I am saying, is that when the average consumer goes into a store to look at HD players, the sales people aren't sending them to the video game department...they are being sent to the home entertainment/home theatre department.

While I will admit that I haven't been into every store, every store I have been in has the Xbox 360 & PS3 in the video game department while the HD DVD & Blu-ray players are in the home entertainement department.
