Toshiba: DVD Forum Hasn't Yet Approved Final 51 GB HD DVD After All

In a statement to BetaNews this afternoon, a Toshiba spokesperson said that only a preliminary version of Toshiba's 51 GB three-layer, single-sided HD DVD format had been approved by the DVD Forum, caretaker of HD DVD.

As it turned out, and as Toshiba's spokespersons may have only just now realized, the DVD Forum signed off on a preliminary specification, which may have been confused for the final specification because its version number is 1.9.

2 popular day & date releases for HD DVD.  They were outsold by "300" on Blu-ray (a month old).

Where is the data to back up this claim...you don't seem to have included it. Not that I would be surprised if 'Blades' was not a big seller....not the type of movie I would deem worth the premium cost for HD. I purchased it on DVD myself. 300 is HD worthy....Heroes as well, albeit pricey (and I paid). And before you look at my collection and say "You don't think 'Blades of Glory' is HD worthy, but 'Rumour has it' is?" I should point out that I bought it at a used book/music store for $10...and I still think I paid too much...not a good film. Also found 'Lady in the Water' there for $15 which I did enjoy....except for the guy playing the "world-changing writer dude"...he was terrible.

It's just a fact.

Dude, that's what RETAIL stores do!  They sell SPACE to manufacturers wanting to sell their products.  That the way it's ALWAYS been for a far back as I can remember!  Blu-ray was already leading in sales 2:1.  We should ALL know that retailers hate housing two formats for a format war.  The BDA just bought HD DVD's space as well (Target supposedly approached the BDA with it).  That's normal.

Dude, tell me something that I don't already know.  It isn't surprising, but you completely missed the point.  The post wasn't about what is 'normal', it was about what is fair.

Quote:
Don't try to compare that to the Paramount (or as some people say...Paramounted) deal.  They are not a retail store.  Plus they went COMPLETELY against market trends and drop the HD sales LEADER (Blu-ray) to support HD DVD only.  The people the voted with their wallets and purses voted for Blu-ray 2:1.  To go against that is anti-consumer behavior (by very definition).]

Who compared it to the Paramount deal?  The post was about a Warner deal.

Fair is subjective.  It tends to vary from person to person.

What Warner deal are you referring to?

You are talking about yourself here right?  Most people in this forum would say this applies to you and you alone.  How you can't see that is beyond me.

Prove my links wrong.    My challenge has stood for quite some time now.

My question would be, "are all these 'next-gen' features backwards compatible or will the early adopters need to buy new players?

The way I understand it... yes and no.

Some of the current BD Java features work on Profile 1.0 players. The more advance features willl need Profile 1.1 players, web-enabled content will need Profile 2.0 players.

I just saw a profile 1.1 board, I can link it later if you all like. It contains an ethernet port, so it would be upgradeable to Profile 2.0.

Part of my understanding is that, if a BRD uses something that requires Profile 2.0 and you have a Profile 1.0 or 1.1 player, those features will not show up in the BRD menu system. Same for Profile 1.1 features (pip) in a profile 1.0 player. However, the pip stream would be viewable as a standalone function as it can be scaled to full screen.

Did I answer your question or go off on some tangent?

You are correct.  Profile 1.1 players could be upgraded to profile 2.0 players, but only if there is 1GB of memory on-board.

For the others, this the Profile breakdowns (I think I posted this info a while back)...

Profile 1.0 - ALL BD-J software functions

Profile 1.1 - ALL of Profile 1.0 plus PiP (Picture-in-Picture)

Profile 2.0 - ALL of Profile 1.0 and 1.1 plus web content/features (i.e. linking BD players together for competitions, etc.)

Sharp should have a Profile 1.1 player early next year.  Daewoo should have a Profile 2.0 player early next year.  Well, ANY BD player launched after Oct. 31 will be AT LEAST Profile 1.1 compliant.

Of course, the PS3 should handle all Profiles with a firmware update.  It is the fastest and most feature laden HD player on the market for the price.

In the 5th post on page 100, pplchamp mentioned a rumored deal between Toshiba and Warner.  He also said, "If true, why can't Toshiba play fair?"  That is the post I was responding to...take a look, it is easy to figure out as I quoted it.

You went on to quote my reply...which is on the bottom of page 100...that included his post.  Why you did that I do not know as it is painfully obvious you didn't bother to read it.  Had you read it, you would have known why I was talking about what was 'fair'  and you would have known we were talking about a rumored Warner deal.

Please, either read what is being written or stay out of the conversation.  Posting like you just did just makes you look like an idiot.

Holy smokes!  Ken's new forum blocking feature just shrunk the heck out of this thread!  Only problem is now the blah, blah posts don't make any sense.

Wow, what a debate. I didn't read the enitre 105 pages so forgive me if I repeat any information that has already been discussed. Where does everyone get there information from? It seems to me that there are a lot of facts and figures thrown around with very little (true) information to back it up. What I'm asking is this...In order to make any INFORMED decision one must take a look at all the facts in any given situation and come to a logical conclusion. Notice I said facts, not merely marketing hype. How do you pull together your information and separate the fact from the fiction?

For instance, the idea that Blu-Ray uses the same technologies as HD DVD, as I've seen posted on this forum. That is simply not the case. Yes, Blu-Ray has support for it, yet (to my knowledge) there have been no titles actually produced using it (MPEG4). I could be wrong on that but as I said, as far as I know my information is still accurate.

Another example would be that Blu-Ray players have basically buried HD DVD players in sales. How many of you think of the PS3 as a BD player before you think of it as a gaming console? Sony IS padding the sales numbers by including the PS3 as a player sale. Just as my PS2 does not count as a DVD player (to me), a PS3 doesn't count as a BD player.

Again, just curious where everyone pulls information from?

By the way, with the relatively small amount of love that retailers have shown HD DVD (corporate payouts are great, aren't they?)I think it's a strong indication of true public opinion that HD DVD is even still around. Think about it.

So...if we all block the ASC he will literally be posting into a vacuum. I wonder if that will discourage him from his usual spamming? Probably not.

EDIT: Wow. He is just...gone. <<blissful sigh>>

I mis-typed and now stand corrected. My point was that BD supports the codec but doesn't require it.

Don't care because I won't have to see it anymore.

I only hope everyone blocks him (I'm looking at you Unicus ) so we won't be stuck seeing the other side of the argument either.

Target shelves in favor of Blu-ray

About twice as many BD titles than HD DVD in stores

SEPT. 14 | Target is shifting the balance of its high-definition software merchandising toward Blu-ray Disc, now devoting twice the amount of display space to that format than it does to HD DVD in some or all of its stores.

When the chain first launched a high-def section within its new release DVD wall last year, display space for Blu-ray and HD DVD discs was equal. At a number of Los Angeles stores, there were 12 designated title slots, aligned along two vertical rows, for each format.

But in the last several weeks, various industry sources have noted Target doubling the room for Blu-ray titles, while keeping shelving for HD DVD titles the same. At three Los Angeles and two Orange County, Calif., locations, Target had space for 24 Blu-ray titles along four vertical rows and 12 HD DVD titles along two vertical rows. At one Philadelphia-area Target, there appeared to be four times the room committed to Blu-ray than there was to HD DVD software.

In October, Target will begin offering Sony’s $499 Blu-ray player as its sole high-def set-top product in stores and has been expected to give Blu-ray software priority merchandising with the players.
