This is my videotape collection I managed to slowly put together from 1980 to about 1997 ...  AND  in 2000 I boxed up the whole works and donated them to my family and friends who had not yet invested in DVD ..
I then- over the past 15 years -managed to hopefully put that same library back together with standard and blue ray titles of today (.. I won't bore you with more photos) .. and as well, the latest Newest titles of today to again complete my collection ..

Please no more new formats .. okay ??

While I share the sentiment, we know it's inevitable... Well, or maybe it isn't? I wonder if we switch to download-only before they can prepare a new format...

I never had that many films on VHS, just over a hundred tapes I think. Most of them contained home made copies from laserdisc anyway so eventually I just threw them away when I had everything I wanted on DVD. The few originals I had I sold as one cheap bundle.

For VHS that was pre-recorded and now I own on DVD I tended to give them away to charity (if the shops accepted them!), friends or the bin.

For stuff still not available I retained them (including off air recordings that are unlikely to ever be released... especially things like original Have I Got News For You's with the Diana jokes intact which the BBC has stated categorically will be cut from any DVD releases). I should try to get around to ripping them to digital but I haven't yet.

I still have the occasional sort through to see if any of the have been 'supplanted' by a more recent purchase but most haven't.

I do the same. For shows I once recorded but now never watch again, those tapes will end up in the trashbin.
Unfortunately, I can't use DVDprofiler at the moment due to lack of a Windows computer.

I boxed up about 1500 and gave them to my sister. She has a VHS projection unit and shows films outside on a screen during the summer when her kids and grandkids are visiting.

I haven't thrown them all out ... I still have 13 that I can't replace on DVD.  I'd replace them if I could.

As for the rest of them, I gave a large chunk to a friend (as well as the cabinet) and traded the rest in before they were completely worthless.

While my collection isn't nearly as large as yours (I had around 100, I think) it actually wasn't hard for me to get rid of almost my entire collection rather quickly. It was more for the purpose of making room for DVDs in my limited number of shelves. I have kept a few for different reasons (eg: the original theatrical cuts of the Star Wars trilogy) but when the time came, out the rest of them went to the library.

Like most of you, I still have a handful of VHS that aren't replaceable. I have hopes for some of them still, but the majority will likely never see a release. A few were taped off TV and most of those I've converted to DVD but kept the original just in case. I'd definitely upgrade if there was an option available, though.

I remember in the beginning how nice it was when I replaced one with DVD as it opened up a ton of space in my limited space-for every one tape, I could fit 2 DVDs, sometimes 3 if it was a clamshell type of case!

I still have half a dozen Betamax in the loft, mainly of the SF 49ers Superbowl triumphs, a couple of dozen Flyfishing VHS and 3-4 of the Mademoiselles Mole when they were toddlers. All irreplaceable.

I rented one movie on VCR and the quality was so bad I never rented another. Plus I did not want to transfer the possible dirt from a rental tape to my SVCRs.

I did tape Laser Discs I rented because in those days the only place that had a good selection was across town and the return delay was such that ran two SVCR, quality as good as laser disc, to copy them so I would have weeks viewing. Besides in those days I was still working and didn't have the time to drive across town a several times a week. If I liked movie I would order it. I still have a large collection of Laser discs.
I should have gotten rid of some of them, but many have some very nice books with them.

But I have a large number of Great Courses, The teaching Company on tape.
I started collecting them as soon as they started the company from an add I saw in The Smithsonian.
I purchased a Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo to save some of my lecture courses that are no longer available.

In moving stuff around as part of painting & flooring my little castle I found a bunch of stuff I should have gotten rid of hi-fi equipment, etc. example the first HP color printer, I think it cost about $900.00, Hey, I was working in those days. Maybe I ought to start a museum.

I still have computer systems, spare parts, and software from every decade leading back to the early 80s as well as dot matrix printers, a hand-rolled scanner, a word processor/DM printer among other things. I just never know when I may need them. It's surprising the age of some systems I still find that people want repaired because the system suits their needs instead of buying something newer. Last year alone I worked on several Windows '95 computers and one Windows 3.1 system with its 10MB (that's with an 'M') hard drive.

I had about 450 tapes, give or take. After DVD, I started replacing them. It didn't take to long to have the field narrowed down to about 6 which have since been released.

I gave them away to family and friends or let them ravage my collection until they were gone. I kept the VCR and the tapes I couldn't stand to be without until they were released on DVD.

Now I'm doing the same thing with Blu-ray. I suppose next it will be 4K...8K. At my age and limited income, I won't make it through the next round unless I hit the lottery.

Couldn't find anyone interested, so I chucked about 600 commersial tapes and a couple of hundred recorded from TV or Laserdisc in the garbage container. Haven't gotten around to chucking the VHS player yet.
