Per rules when it comes to possessives... if there is a possessive on the front cover. And there is here.... you look at the credit block. If the Credit Block has "Marvel's The Avengers"  it all goes in the title field. If it has Marvel's "The Avengers" (only The Avengers in quotes)... then only The Avengers goes in the title field.

So I would have to ask on your copy... what does it have on the credit block (usually on back of case)?

No quote marks at all? Then I would just go with The Avengers.

When there is no quotes at all you go by the following rule...

Rules Quote:
Quote:
Include possessives if the front cover includes them, and if they are verifiably part of the title. If quotes surround the title in the credit block (generally on the back cover), check whether the possessive is within the quotes. In the absence of quotes to verify, check the font size used for the title on the front cover. Generally, possessives which use a significantly smaller font are not part of the title.

See the part I put in bold. So without proof that Marvel's is indeed part of the title... going by the above I would go with just The Avengers per the above rule.

The whole title ('Marvel's The Avengers') is in quotes on my copy, the red ring he drew covers them.

OK... in that case as long as the entire thing is in quotes then it would be...

Title: Marvel's The Avengers
Original Title: Blank

So you would agree that "Marvel's The Avengers" is the original title of the movie?
I have been having this discussion with huskersports as well, and since his change to this title on one profile got downvoted with the reason that "The Avengers" was the original title he's on a mission changing every instance of it on all localities.

Was it ever released as just "The Avengers" in cinemas?

The title might very well vary - it depends on what is on the front cover and the back credit block.

I only seen this once at the theater... so until my copy arrives I have to hold off and wait to verify it. But going by my memory at least... I remember seeing "Marvel's The Avengers" not once... but twice in the credits. Once in the opening credits and once in the closing credits.

Now as I said... that is going by memory. So I can't say for sure till I see it again. Comes out later this month over here.

It says "Marvel's The Avengers" in the movie, on my bluray copy as well.

And Kathy, what do you mean with "The title might vary"?
Can't a movie have only one original title, the one it was released as in cinemas in the country of origin?

What I was trying to find out is if they had changed the title of the movie between the cinema release and the home version.

If not, then huskersports have to remove all his changes from "Marvel's the Avengers" to "The Avengers", and his no-votes to all contributions that has "Marvel's the Avengers" as original title.

Kathy is talking about the Title field... not the Original Title field. The title field can vary between the releases.

The Original Title field may or may not be needed depending what is in the title field.

If a release has "Marvel's The Avengers" for a title (and the title in the film credits is "Marvel's The Avengers"... as I believe I remember) then the original title field is not used at all.

If the title of the release is only  "The Avengers"... and the credits are as I remembered.... the "Marvel's The Avengers" would belong in the Original Title field.

Here's how it went: I stated in another forum thread that Marvel's the Avengers (no quotes) came right before the entire cast list on the dvd. So I contributed that for the original title (if needed) in all the UPC's (for linking purposes in the CLT). Well, one Profiler persuaded the screeners that that was wrong, so, yes, I "went on a mission" to change all of them BACK to "The Avengers" (again, for seamless linking in the CLT). Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but the original title of the country of origin, country of first publication, etc.'s original title (The Avengers or Marvel's the Avengers) or title/original title (Marvel's the Avengers/The Avengers) should be applied across all of this film's profiles, correct? Otherwise, we're going to have 3 or 4 titles in the CLT for 1 FILM!  That's what my "mission" is, is to avoid that nonsense.
My one wish for the DVD Profiler online database: Ban or remove the disc-level profiles of TV season sets. It completely screws up/inflates the CLT.
FACT: Imdb is WRONG 70% of the time! Misspelled cast, incomplete cast, wrong cast/crew roles. So for those who want DVD Profiler to be "as perfect as Imdb", good luck with that.
Stop adding UNIT crew! They're invalid credits. Stop it!

No... it won't necessarily be the same across the board. For films withing it's own locality we use whatever is in the credits for the Original Title (if different then the case).

This can be different then what the actual "original title" is.

Rules Quote:
Quote:
Original Title
The Original Title field serves two general purposes, but in both cases allows for the tracking of the original feature title. For profiles which have an alternate title displayed on the cover, use the title from the film's credits. For titles released outside their country of origin, use the original release title.
In cases where the title is the original title, leave the Original Title field blank.

Notice the parts I put in bold... especially the first part.

The Credits says Marvel's The Avengers (no quotes... but never seen quotes around the title in the credits before myself anyway).... then that would be the original title in it's country of Origin... no matter if it is the actual original title or not.

I see this especially with cheap releases of low budget horror titles... where there could be multiple alternate titles... and the case uses 1 alternate title... and the credits use another alternate title. In these cases the true Original Title don't get in the database as the rules are written.

So in the end... the Original Title is not necessarily going to always be the same on all releases.

Quoting huskersports:

That "mission"... while completely understandable... may or may not be correct per the rules... depending on the release and what is actually in the credits. (Speaking generally... not necessarily on this title... though there is no way to know for sure unless you see every release for the title.)
