I have the following complete series set...

Right now on the profile it has a small 3D cover... the case is not too big to scan so I am doing an update on it.

I read in another thread that we should submit these types turned on their side instead of landscape like above to get the bigger better image in the database. So the scan in profiler would look like...

Which is fine by me... no problem. The question I have though... is that the back cover is just pure black. Nothing on there... not even a single logo. There wasn't even a data sheet attached to the back. All the info is in a booklet inside the package. With the UPC and some other very limited info on one of the thin sides of the box. So was wondering what I should do... scan the pure black back of the case... or not even bother and use the front image for both (how it is currently with the 3D art.

My first instinct is to scan the back and use it... after all it is the way the case is. But I can see people complaining... saying what is the sense of just a black image taking up space in the profile.

Thoughts?

Here is how the actual front and back cover scan looks in profiler...

Rules:  scan the black back of the box.

Sense:  it doesn't add anything to the profile, but at least it's correct.  (And having the front scan again certainly doesn't add anything.)

As for the black scan "taking up space in the profile," since it's all one color it would take up far less "space" than the picture.

If it were in my collection I might do something else locally, but I don't know what.

That is my thoughts on it as well. I just expect some no votes because of the plain black back.

I think Mithi answered this question quite well in another thread:

Mainly where the cover is rotated 90degrees, personally I prefer it scanned so the text is horizontal.

For contribution I'd prefer portrait over landscape. If you contribute landscape the cover will be cropped to the allowed maximum width of 500 pixels, leaving it with a height of ~360 pixels. So you lose almost half the resolution as opposed to the 500 width * 700 height that is possible.
Locally I would rotate the cover afterwards, leaving me with a 700 x 500 cover.

It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

As I said in the first post... this I already read and understood. I was really only concerned about getting no votes because of the plain black back image.

Sorry Pete,
just took a look at the pics and assumed this was about rotation.

When trying to edit my post I had to notice that you already answered.

Yes, I've heard about this concept.
Will give it a try as soon as I managed to figure out what "Watching" in regard to DVDs is supposed to mean.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

On a side note. I just submitted the profile with the black back image. Will be watching the votes.

Those are the right scans per rules to be submitted, but I'd replace the black back with something from the inside locally.

I thought about doing that myself... the only thing in there is the episode guide booklet and 2 small accordion type cardboard envelops to hold the discs. I was hoping the episode guide booklet had a page that talked about the series itself... but it don't. Though I think I may find something to replace that plain black image.

I'd say you decide what's back and front. Such a box has six sides after all.

For example:

I have the british Buffy and Angel Box. It's basically a hug slip case, holding 7/5 season boxes with one out of six sides open. I decided and contributed the side that IMHO looked best as front and the side with the most useful information as back. And these are not necessarily opposite sides of the cuboid.

And the one of the german Babylon 5 boxes is a huge metal box with a lid on top. Someone else decided that the lid is the front and the bottom is the back because there's a piece of paper with lots of useful information. I'm perfectly find with this.

Your current front looks like a decent front. I just would try to find another one of the other 5 sides that is not black but more helpful to the owners of that profile.

The shape of this box and what is on the box there is no mistaken the front and the back... sorry... I don't buy that for a second.

If it was a completely square box I may say you have something... but no... there is no mistaken what is the front and the back of this case.

Edit to Say....

In this case all other sides are just thin strips.

If it was me, I would scan the side with the UPC (if any) and call that the "back".

Just a thin strip... no... that is not the back. There is many...MANY times that on a box set the UPC is not on the back.
