I'm a little baffled that I get no votes on contributions where I change a Blu-ray's region coding to "no region coding" ... not because the data is incorrect but because those users say it should say A,B,C instead of "no region coding"

However, correct me if I'm wrong but "no region coding" is the only way to input a region-free disc:
- I check no region > DVDP autoconverts to "no region coding"
- I check all regions (A, B and C) > DVDP autoconverts to "no region coding"

So no matter what I do, it'll say "no region coding" when I submit the data online. Is there any way to go about it differently? I'm asking because I might've missed something and so far two users have voted no against my contribution for that reason

You are doing it correctly Taro, it's the no voters are are mistaken.

As you stated, it doesn't matter if you check them all as "A,B,C" or leave all 3 unchecked, it will still submit both ways as "no region coding"

Precisely. You might consider sending the no-voters a PM explaining this and/or referring them to this thread.

I did just that. Hopefully they'll read it and change their vote. Thanks for the confirmation, guys

This behaviour was instated by Invelos exactly to stop the debate (and the ping-ponging that it caused) between users that insisted that, when faced with a non-region-coded disc, all regions needed to be checked, and users that insisted that no regions should be checked. Ken chose for the latter, and that is now automatically enforced. There's a similar contribution filter to correct the 2.4:1 aspect ratio shown on the cover of some Blu-rays, which some people diligently copied into DVD Profiler, to the proper "2.40:1" format we store it in.

Nevertheless it's wrong, region-free doesn't mean that a disc is forbidden for any region but that it is allowed for all the regions.

Actually, blu-rays marked ABC usually don't have ANY region coding which means it's more correct to list them as "no region" than "all regions" (or A, B, C.) But since it serves no practical purpose to distinguish all from none, Ken made the right decision to ignore it.

There was once a request for an "undefined" (unchecked) state but I don't think it's really needed.

Even if that were the case, since the software autoconverts, that still makes the no votes invalid, no?

Absolutely correct.

This isn't even a case of "....maybe". The program changes it automatically to no region coding, even if you check all the region boxes, so the no votes are incorrect without question.
The night is calling. And it whispers to me soflty come and play.

OK, well thanks for clearing it up (and the little history lesson behind the reason for this autoconversion). I guess the screeners will sort it out then.

we have exactly the same behaviour with DVDs - and since I can buy dvds for all regions (but take them to friends who only have a R2 player) - I have to go back and tick all the regions in this case. If I don't then when I search for a R2 dvd to take round, then all my dvds which have no region ticked (because they are all region) don't appear in the list.

So I feel it a shame he didn't choose the opposite (and have all boxes ticked rather than none).

Seems to me more a problem with the search function. It should of course have the ability to include no regions.

Yes.

I was referring to the point that Ken has chosen the wrong, inconsequential alternative. If a disc plays in Region 2, you check Region 2, of course. But if a disc plays in every region you check nothing? Following this logic you would have to check 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 for Region 2 instead.

You're missing a small, but important detail here: we check Region 2 if the disc only plays in Region 2. Just like we check Regions 2 and 4 if the disc only plays in Regions 2 and 4. "Only" is the key word here. But if the disc plays in ALL regions, then the program lists the disc as "No Region Coding". There's nothing "wrong" or "inconsequential" about that at all. KinoNiki is right in that the search could be improved, though.

Only that "No Region Coding" is wrong, the disc is coded, to be playable not only in one or some but even in all Regions, so sometimes you check the playable Regions, sometimes you don't. You can also see the inconsistency from the fact that you now have to explain the (initially self-explanatory) system to the voters, or that the implementation of new features is demanded in order to circumvent the ramifications.
