| Posted: | | | | In an effort to try to keep things a bit more civil here can we please remove the smiley from the emoticon list? It serves no purpose other than to show your disgust with the person it is addressed at. I'm sure that was not the original intent but it has certainly come to that. It only adds to the continuing nastiness of the forum atmosphere. Even browsing the forums and not really reading anything when you come across a post with in it it's hard not to know that is yet another attacking post. I am a huge fan of the smiley in general and personally think we could use more but this one has to go. |

| Posted: | | | | Does that include the ones that you use too, Which serve the same function and are NOT part of the Profiler smileys, Let's just ban them if they are not profiler, that way your distasteful and insulting smileys will disappear too. This is but a thinly veiled attack on another user. And should be REMOVED | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! CBE, MBE, MoA and proud of it. Outta here

| Posted: | | | | These smiley inserts are there to use if you choose. There are none in the emoticon box offensive. If there is a need to remove one remove all of them and ban them completely from posts IMO |

| Posted: | | | | I have never used that smiley and wouldn't miss it.
I would replace that for one that is laughing hysterically!
I would also like the laughing smiley fixed so that it is actually laughing. |

| Posted: | | | | I'm not a fan of emoticons in general, but they are a part of internet vernacular so I accept them and try to use them judiciously. That's probably a side-effect of my academic leanings. Oh yeah, and I'm pretentious. [place emoticon of your choice :here:] I'm also not one to take sides so, please, this is not aimed at anyone.
In my time teaching college freshmen I've found one of the most frustrating lessons is to build a message into the way something is phrased. One of the biggest hurdles? Students who believe in something soooooooooooo much that they use tooooooooo many "ooooo's" or toooooo much punctuation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why??????????????? I view it as a grammatical equivalent of hyperbolic pathos. Screaming the severity of an emotion and, in my opinion, detracting from the message.
That said, similar use of emoticons is also part of internet vernacular. For my part, I tend to disregard posts that use consecutive emoticons (or punctuation) because they often reveal the writer's bias more than their message (in my opinion). That's in both cases where I agree or disagree the the perspective being expressed. | | | Last edited: by IronWaffle |

| Posted: | | | | Perhaps a better idea would be to ban posts that contain only smileys. That way people are forced to actually write something to give the smiley context. |

Of course you haven't Quoting OldMan56: Quote: These smiley inserts are there to use if you choose. There are none in the emoticon box offensive. But that one in particular does nothing but add to the negative attitude in the forums that Invelos is supposedly trying to change. If they truly want to change it then I suggest removing it. Of course it is ultimately up to them to do whatever they want. Yes, you are one who continously uses the in your posts when you are degrading someone and yes, it would help the atmosphere if Invelos removed that option. But not just for you, for everyone. We've been requested to skip posts that might offend you. It's easy to skip past words. It's almost impossible to skip pictures unless the user is blocked. An option I do use but has been pointed out numerous times it's hard to read the forums if you have someone blocked who posts every 3rd or 4th message in every thread (now that was addressed at one person). I made the suggestion. I'm not going to dwell on it. If Ken wants to do it he will. If not he wont. It would only help IMNSHO |

In short, you want to control speech and thought of others, while leaving tourself free to use your distasteful and insulting emoticons. BTW, Iron Waffle, I seeyour point but I think you are discounting one very important point. If you are reading bias that is YOU, the user, speaking for myself, is not usually indicating any bias at all, but is using them for emphasis. | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! Of course it is ultimately up to them to do whatever they want. I've got to agree with that. As far as I'm aware the "rolleyes" emoticon represents exasperation, a visual way of saying "here we go again!", a purely negative thing. All the other emoticons can have positive uses, even the "frown" and "angry" ones - as it warns people what they are saying is having a negative effect on you, and they can take positive actions to remedy it. The "rolleyes" seems only there to promote a negative feeling, to belittle the poster it's aimed at. Of course I'm happy to hear if anyone knows of any positive uses for it. |

| Posted: | | | | North: You made a very important comment and then gklossed over it. You are quite correct, the usually does represent exasperation an/or frustration, if you think it is being meant to demmean or attack a user, then you are oputting yourself in the position of prtending to know what is in the mind of another user, which you aren't qualified to do. I am just amused at Rick's wanting to ban one smiley, while exempting the ones he uses which also could be considered highly offensive and insulting to other users. His duplicitousness is quite hilarious. He should throw rocks at someone else unless he is suer no one can throw them back at him. | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! CBE, MBE, MoA and proud of it. Outta here

| Posted: | | | | I don't think I have ever used it, but I never took it as negative. I took it sometimes as looking up at the last post above or an oh yeah now I get it. There is a smile on its face, how negative is that. If you are offended by emoticons you should maybe not read these forums and take up Yoga. | | | Marty - Registered July 10, 2004, User since 2002. |

I've never took it to mean that, and I don't think I've ever seen it used in that context before, but if that's what it's meant to mean perhaps replacing with with a "lightbulb" smiley or something more obvious may be a better solution. |

| Posted: | | | | I too have taken it to infer exasperation, but it also can convey condescension depending on the arrogance of the statement preceding it.
I agree with you Rick, due to the nature of the forum atmosphere and the lack of implementing the obvious solution to what's causing that atmosphere, it should be removed.
I frequent 3 other forums that discuss DVD's and each of those sites have nearly a non-existent problem with aggressive behavior. Why, because they have the balls to address those that cannot or will not tone down their personality problems.
This is why this forum has become a haven for one of the most annoying trolls on the web, and I'm not referring to you Skip. |
