| Posted: | | | | I haven't made the switch to Blu Ray yet, but depending on the answer to my question I may make the switch sooner.
While doing some research on Blu Ray, I found out that they are region coded different then what DVD is. Now I know that Blu Ray player will play a DVD & upconvert them, so my question is: Can a Blu Ray player coded to Region A (which is what I'd be buying of course) play a DVD with Region code 2? |

| Posted: | | | | The other issue to think about is that a lot of region 2 titles are PAL. As well as needing to be able to change the region, you'd also need to make sure that the player can handle a PAL source. |

As Kinoniki said, you can't take it for granted. And also the PAL-issue might come up, depending on your BD-Player and TV. I for one still use my old region-free and UOP-free Sony DVP-NS405 and let my Sony HDTV do the upscaling. cya, Mithi | | | Mithi's little XSLT tinkering - the power of XML --- DVD-Profiler Mini-Wiki |

| Posted: | | | | I thought the region of BR and DVD are two seperate things. On my BR player I can play all region DVD's, but only BR region B. To unlock the region for the DVD I just used the remote, enter code, open tray, etc. For the BR I need to make physical changes to the BR player. A BR player will upscale your DVD's. So your DVD's will look beter |

They are separate but not all Blu-ray players can be made multi-region for DVD playback. One of my players can be but the other can't. Likewise, how they can be changed varies as well, while the way you mentioned is the most common, mine needed a special remote control to change it. |

From this we could conclude that the TS just has to search on the internet how easy it is (if possible) to make his BR player (DVD and/or BR) region free. I don't think PAL will be an issue. At leats in Europe is very common that a television/dvd (and BR) player can play both PAL and NTSC. | | | Last edited: by Matt788 |

That's just it though, it's more of a problem the other way around. PAL is a higher resolution than NTSC so it's easier to add support to fit less lines on a screen than it is to fit more on than a screen supports. My region A Blu-ray player doesn't support PAL at all but an almost identical model by a different manufacturer does. |

pdf I have the UK DMP-BD30 rather than the 60 but that plays NTSC as well as PAL. ALL UK TVs, VCRs, DVD players, etc... that I've bought over the last 10-15 years support NTSC. |

| Posted: | | | | Region 2 on DVD is both PAL and NTSC (Japan). Region 1 is just NTSC (I think). Hence the lack of PAL support on region 1 players. | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 | | | Last edited: by Nexus the Sixth |

| Posted: | | | | DVD and BD mods are now available that make multi region available on players. Just decide on what it is you need then get a player that suits that modded (Pana and Oppo as examples) |

If you are into pre-ordering stuff so that it get's shipped on the date it get's released I would check this site Movietymebut as a rule of thumb: WB, New Line, Paramount and Universal are usually Codefree Sony are 80% Codefree Lionsgate: The catalog Titles are usually codefree, the new movies are usually coded Disney: Usually Coded Fox: They sadly code almost everything.. Recently they let a few titles slip through though (like Wolverine) | | | Check out my Youtube channel under https://www.youtube.com/user/alittleolder |
