| Posted: | | | | I just watched Hero and wanted to see how many Zhang Ziyi movies I had. To my surprise, I only had Hero and Memoirs of a Geisha, when I could have sworn she was in Rush Hour 2, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and House of Flying Daggers. It seems there is much disagreement as to what her name is. It could also be Ziyi Zhang. CLT shows about a 50/50 split. I know many Chinese actors are in this predicament. Which way is correct? |

| Posted: | | | | Per the Rules, Ace. EXACTLY AS CREDITED is CORRECT, Credited As if you are setting up a Common Name. In short if you see Zhang Zyi On Screen you do NOT enter as Zyi Zhang. As long as As Credited or Credited matches what is seen On Screen you are fine.

| Posted: | | | | You're missing the point. I'm asking what the common name should be as the split is roughly 50/50 and a few of the ones in the DB are certainly wrong. | | | Last edited: by Ace_of_Sevens |

How is Dr Pavlov wrong, this is what the rules say? It's not how the common name should be, but how the name is credited. Her name is Zhang Ziyi. Were Zhang is her last name and Ziyi her first name. "Chinese family names are written first, something which often causes confusion among those from cultures where the family name usually comes last. Thus, the family name of Mao Zedong is Mao (?), and his given name is Zedong (traditional: ??, simplified: ??)."http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_name See "Family Names" Some fansites: http://www.helloziyi.us/http://www.ziyifan.org/http://www.zhang-ziyi.org/http://www.zhangziyiweb.com/ | | | Last edited: by Matt788 |

| Posted: | | | | I agree ther are numerous entries which are without a doubt WRONG. Until they are fixed per the Rules, a reliable result cannot be achieved. The Rules tell everyone how to enter the data AND where to obtain said data. There are users who are not following the rules on either count, and this is why i say a simple association as opposed top something wholly dependent on user inputted data is a bad approach.
Were I a betting man, and I am not, i would bet that most likely the most common entry in reality would be Zhang Zyi.
You know the old saying, Ace...GIGO. Some users are not following the Rules and they are inputting garbage data accordiing to their bias, regardless of what the Rules say to do and they have some interesting ways to rationalize this behavior, the end result is GO.

It's not backed up by the CLT results yet, but that's due to many incorrect IMDb-mined entries (they're using Zyi Zhang). But for our purposes, Zhang Zyi is the common name. It may just take a while before the CLT results catch up to that fact... |

Skippy was not wrong, just that once again instead of answering the actual question he decided to lecture on the rules. IMESHO I also think that Zhang Zyi should be the common name. | | | Last edited: by bob9000 |

| Posted: | | | | Zhang = family name Ziyi = given name Zhang Ziyi is understood by the program as Zhang ZIYI, though the real name is ZHANG Ziyi (problem with all asian names). So we have people who enter her name as Ziyi Zhang, so that the program understands Ziyi ZHANG, and sorts this name correctly. There is an easy way to make all people happy, adding a tick box in name field, but this request was sabotaged by the most vocal users of this forum. | | | Images from movies | | | Last edited: by surfeur51 |

| Posted: | | | | Please, not another thread about Asian names, there have been too many already.
The program currently can't cope well with names in the format Last name// first name and it is up to the programmer to solve this. At the moment we do exactly as Skip says, and IMHO no need to use CLT with ASIAN names or only locally.
edit: let me specify what I meant by ' IMHO no need to use CLT with ASIAN names or only locally.'
Use it for name variants of course but not to justify Ziyi Zhang credited as Zhang Ziyi | | | Last edited: by sugarjoe |

There is, of course, definitely a need to use the "credited as" feature for Asian names, just as there is for any other name. Whenever the person's credited with a different name variant than the "most-credited" form, then you use "credited as". That stays the same no matter how bad the program deals with Asian names. |

That is why it is interesting to speak from time to time of this problem. Perhaps one day Ken will at last decide to do something, as it is really easy to solve... | | | Images from movies |

I think sugar Joe means we should not use the CLT just to reverse the name. In other words, if she is always credited as 'Zhang Ziyi', we enter her as 'Zhang/ /Ziyi'. We do not create 'Ziyi/ /Zhang (Zhang Ziyi). | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
