The picture is much clearer and the Sound in Dolby True HD enhances the Soundfield so incredibly..

| | Posted: | | | | I just watched Blade Runner - The Final Cut on Blu-Ray last night and it knocked my socks off  . The Picture quality was a world away from the DVD...absolutely astounding. I particularly loved the scenes where they overflew the city. The detail was incredible on my Plasma. The sound was awesome as well. Another good one is Serenity on Blu-Ray. From what I have seen in terms of screenshots, I am surprised to agree with surfeur, because I really didn't think classic animation would be able to benefit that much from BD. | | Posted: | | | | The Longest Day Blu-ray is one of the best I've seen that is a huge step up from the previous DVD versions. It looks absolutely fantastic in blu-ray, and this is a black and white movie that came out in 1962! I popped in the old 2-disc DVD release and it looks absolutely horrid...the image is dark and blurry. It only took me 3 replacements sets before I finally got the correct 1st disc in the set...as the first three had a duplicate of Disc 5, even though the bad disc was even labelled correctly as Disc 1. I thought the old "Saviour of the Universe Edition" transfer looked pretty good as far as DVD goes, but this blows that away.
I'll keep my R2 SteelBook "Silver Anniversary Edition" for the extras, but that transfer is simply obsolete now. | | | | Corey |

I too have the "Saviour of the Universe" edition and thought it was pretty darn good. Between the two there is no contest. Skip Fantasia is on my wishlist, too.  And, most wanted, James Cameron's "The Abyss". The non-anamorphic DVD is not what this movie deserves. According to interviews with Van Ling a new HD transfer is ready (afaik since almost two years), but as long as Cameron doesn't give his seal of approval to it, we have to wait.  |

| | Posted: | | | | I have to agree with Stephan that Blade Runner is one, if not the, release that shows the biggest difference in terms of PQ from DVD to Blu-ray. It's the definition of what a remaster should be.
Honorable mentions also for Star Trek The Original Series. This series was beautifully remastered with seamless branching allowing you to select the original or remastered FX and a beautiful 7.1 DTS HD MA soundtrack. For a series of that age, it was magnificently cleaned up and remastered.
Also worth mentioning:
- The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (PQ & AQ)
- The Ultimate Matrix Collection (PQ & AQ)
- Paprika (great upgrade over the DVD version)
- Minority Report
- First Blood
- Stargate 15 Anniversary Edition
- Toy Story 1 & 2
As mentioned by Skip and Surfeur, not just movies, TV-series and 3D animation can benefit greatly from the upgrade, but classic 2D animation as well and maybe in some cases even the most (Sword of the Stranger is also a nice example). | | | Blu-ray collection
