EAN: 0667068824629

I think the publisher is Dreamworks.
Many though seem to think this should be Universal Pictures, which I believe to be the distributor for this EAN in the Benelux. Cover says something along the lines of "[..] Available in the Benelux only through Universal Pictures [..]"
So Dreamworks is the distributor for everything outside the Benelux.

The first copyright notice (all rights reserved etc.) refers to Dreamworks aswell.

Universal Pictures.

Outside Benelux has nothing to do with this release. In the Benelux the first release of Shrek was only available through Universal Pictures (also in the copyright notice).

DreamWorks Home Entertainment ("publishing label")
DreamWorks (Copyright)
Universal Pictures (Distrubutor)

so DreamWorks Home Entertainment is the value for our "Publisher"-field

I am very curious where you got that information.... The backcover does NOT mention any copyrights for Universal. ONLY distribution rights. Even package and design are mentioned to belong to Dreamworks, along with any copyrights. That information is all in the first sentence (before the Dolby trademark text).

Based on the back cover, it is 'DreamWorks Home Entertainment'.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

This misunderstanding is exactly I was afraid of when the contributor field was renamed into publisher.

Simple raymond, the term Publisher is the figment of some users imahoinatiuon and has NO MEANING or definition with in the film industry. There has not been a an agreeable definition to the term created. It means something different to a lot of people...thus it is a mess. It was done for on esimple reason and that was because some users did not like the existing, though it was easy to understand and enter and they wanted to enter the data that THEY felt was useful, regardless that other user found the Distributor field to be equally valuable, this was simply the height of user of SELFISHNESS and should have never been chganged., instead more fields should have been added and a way figured out to define the data.

Thanks for the explanation, Skip. I must admit that sometimes it's very hard to distinguish between distributor and "publisher". and yes, the distributor is always easy to find on the backcover.

As I said in a previous thread, I don't care what they call the field as long as the rule is clear about what should be entered.

This currently says -

Quote:
Enter the DVD publishing company which is usually found (dated with the year of the DVD release) on the back of the box. If the DVD Publishing company isn't located on the box or packaging, take the DVD publisher from the disc's credits.

To me, this is still quite clear as to what to enter.

As for selfishness, at the end of the day, this is now and always has been Ken's program. Whether we believe it to be right or wrong, the final decision is always up to him what to call any field & what should be entered. At the time it was changed, he felt it was the right thing to do. He may later change his mind and reverse it. Again that is his prerogative as the owner.

You are right, ofcourse, but only to a certain extent: what would this program be without its users?
We do not own the program, no, but i like to think Ken DOES listen en let himself be adviced by the people that use his software. So up to a certain degree we, the users, do decide what the program entails and provides to us. (we pay for it, don't we??)

Oh of course the users have some degree of say & in the case of changing the field name, from everything that has previously been said here, there was a vote that was split approximately 50/50.  With that, Ken was damned if he did, damned if he didn't.

Skip

that has nothing to do with selfishness, skip.
There was a discussion in the "contribution rules commitee"-forum, and there was finally a simple voting:

Quote:
what do we wanna know most/first?

the company who is responsible for the product-release? -> Media Publisher
the company who is responsible for the technical production -> Media Producer
the company who is responsible that the product comes to your store -> Media Distributor

and the result was 10-0-1.

in combination with the rule Ken made it should be clear what to enter in the most cases.

For the record, the poll madacid mentions was locked, by Ken, because we already had a poll on the issue.  That poll asked what we wanted in that field.  The result, as Forget indicated, was a virtual tie:

  • The company that distributed the DVD  (25)

  • The company that produced the DVD  (26)
  • No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
