How much does it bug you when you see mediocre genre selections?

First off, I read the rules on genre :

Genre
Genres are often a matter of personal interpretation, which can differ among users. If your personal preference for Genre differs from the main database, you can store the information you prefer in your local database and lock the Genre field from further updates. Do not make contributions that only change or re-order Genres, unless the existing Genre list is blatantly incorrect.

So I won't be making any contributions just to change the genre.  However, here are some examples which annoy me, and which I will change locally then lock :

The Protector - currently listed as Action, Suspense/Thriller, Comedy
In my humble opinion, this should be Martial Arts.  To add comedy is ridiculous.  Also, Suspense/Thriller is more appropriate to the Bourne series, and finally Action is incredibly general.  This should be Martial Arts first, then action.

Ong Bak - currently listed as Action, Martial Arts.
They got it right with this movie, just backwards.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - Fantasy, Martial Arts
Again, correct but in the incorrect order.  This isn't Lord of the Rings!  It's Martial Arts first and foremost, the most renown Wuxia film made.  All Wuxia films are somewhat fantastical, are they all to be listed as fantasy simply because they run on trees?

House of Flying Daggers - Drama, Action.
DRAMA????  This isn't Steel Magnolias!!!!  Another wuxia pic dogged by terrible genre choices!

Hero - Action, Martial Arts
Same as above, one of Jet Li's finest movies, a wuxia pic which should credit Martial Arts first.

Enter the Dragon - Action, Martial Arts
Jeez, action first??????  This is Bruce Lee's ultimate achievement!!

Black Mask - Action, Martial Arts
<sigh>

My list can go on and on.  The reason it bugs me is when I run a report in DVDP, it comes up with only 5 Martial Arts pics, none of which are listed above.  Or if I sort by Genre, again, it only hits on the 5 which happen to have it listed <correctly> first.  In my humble opinion, all of these films (and I have many more examples, are incorrectly listed).  I will respect the rules and not let my personal judgment intervene, however if you were to ask me, I would say all 6 of these examples are "blatantly incorrect" and contributions changing them should be made.

It doesn't bother me at all, rooster. As noted specifically Genre are subjective, meaning what you think may not be the same as what someone else thinks, including the Order of same. You are free to do whatever you want locally, but beyond that. You weren't here pre-rules and never had the pleasure to witness the weekly changes because someone like you decided the order was incorrect, then somebody would change it to meet their own preference ad infinitum. It got old, real quick.

I agree that sometimes you can run into a genre that's downright perplexing.  I just change it locally and lock it down.  Genre is just not worth getting into a pissing match over.  Besides, somebody obviously disagrees with you or the crazy genres wouldn't have got there in the first place.

I actually don't care about genres so it doesn't bother me at all.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

I gave up on sorting art by genres more than four decades ago.

I had an LP collection of more than 500 albums and I had been sorting them by genre. But were the Rolling Stones to be sorted by British Invasion, Blues Rock, Rock Blues, or (given Their Satanic Majesties Request) Psychedelic? Were the Blues Project to be Blues, Rock, or Folk Rock? Did both the Beach Boys and Procul Harum belong in God Rock (Church Organs and Choir Boys)?

So I started sorting alphabetically, regardless of genre, because the genres all overlapped, changed, refined... and all became ultimately meaningless to me. For a while after that I sorted all my "classical"/concert music by composer's birthdate, which led to visualizing the relationships between Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt and Chopin, but the 20th Century composers seemed to become too much pop, and where do I draw the line? Scott Joplin? Charles Ives? the Gershwins? Richard Rodgers? Frank Zappa? So now Beethoven is sorted somewhere shortly after Beach Boys, Beatles, Beau Brummels... I can find them fast.

To me Crouching Tiger is much more fantasy than martial arts, but that my perspective, and I expect no one to share my view.

I prefer the non-genre "genres" we include -- they are far more specific, less subjective, and more useful to me -- TV is TV is TV... and is not a feature film.

Sort your genres locally, submit them as you choose... I'll just ignore them as you send them to me.
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

Out of curiostiy, what would you have this under?

Personally I have it listed under:
Martial Arts
Romance

I'm toying with the idea of a custom genre of Tragedy which would also apply IMO.

I am like most others here. I find Genres so subjective that I just change them to what I feel right and lock it down. I don't worry one bit about the genres that are online.

Not at all. I pick the genres I want, lock the field and never worry about the online genres again. The only time I add genres to the online is for completely new profiles or if there are empty spots available. And then I mostly go by what's printed on the cover (overview), keeping my personal opinions out of it. The only order I use is alphabetical, since anything else would be highly debatable.

100% agreement there

Indeed... and to comment on your problem

1) Some people (such as myself) *usually* put genres in alphabetical order with a few exceptions.

2) To you, obviously, Martial Arts is a genre as-of-itself, to others it is just a *type* of action or drama or romance so would be a sub genre which is why you think your examples are 'crazy' wheras others think they are correct...

I wouldn't say it bothers me, but I often scratch my head.  A lot of people seem to want to attach "comedy" if there is a single chuckle in the film or "drama" if there's a single scene where there isn't a car chase or gun fight occuring.

It seems like a lot of folks really want to fill all 3 slots and are willing to really really reach to fill them.  It doesn't make much sense to me and it waters the genres down to the point where they're meaningless.

But like most people, I fix 'em at my end and then lock 'em.

Thanks for all the replies, and in particular this one (which explains how The Protector, a fantastically violent film, got tagged as comedy).  I'll stop worrying about Genre online, and go about happily tagging my own preferences locally, then lock them down.  It gives me yet one more way to fiddle with my collection.......

Had to check mine, its as Action, Drama, Romance. Dont really use "Martial Arts" in many movies in my local. To me its like giving "Firearm" genre name to a Die Hard movie. I mean if House of Flying Daggers is a martial arts movie, then so are all the Bourne Identity movies too.
