I'm finding the DVDP is throwing the occasional program error. These don't seem to cause it to fall over, but are worrisome nevertheless. I've not yet detected a pattern to them.

What sort of information should I collect to be of good use to the programming team?

First you need to tell what the error is, most errors are already known. secopnd you need to tell us what version you are running. If you are running 3.1, it will be an academic exercise as we are Beta testing 3.5, if you are running 3.5 then your comments would belong in the beta Forum.

You need to be aware that, at the present time Invelos is a husband and wife venture, with no other KNOWN employees, IF there are other employees they are involved in the screening of titles, which based on the information from old Intervocative Software probably runs into the 30,000 Contributions per month range...so don't expect interaction with Ken and Gerri very much. We, your fellow community members are your single best resource.

We'll need the standard information for first level support:
Which program version?
What did you try to do?
What did you do?
What was the result?
A screenshot of the error message would be great.

Additional information (possibly needed):
Which OS and which version?
Were there recent setup changes to your machine (hard- or software)?
Do other programs show the same (or equivalent) error too?
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

I assume that this thread is the place to post the information?
  • Here is the error message:

  • This occurred as I hit the toolbar button for Add to collection.

  • Context: An ordinary collection display.

  • The program did not terminate

  • I was unable to make it happen again.

  • Hitting the button again had the usual effect of bringing up the Add dialog.

  • No recent changes to my PC.

  • Windows fully patched (as of this past Sunday)

  • No other applications exhibited any disturbance.
  • -R.

Most definitely, unless the error occured using a beta version. Which then would do nicely in the beta forum.

Did you try a database repair?
DVDProfiler menu "Tools -> Options -> Utilities -> Database reapair"
Use the default setting for a complete repair.

  • you're not answering vague on purpose do you? As an experienced user you should know there are several Windows versions?

this is a vague error popping up and would indicate a memory problem of some kind.
Sources for one or more of the changes and/or additions were not submitted. Please include the sources for your changes in the contribution notes, especially for cast and crew additions.

  • Giga,
probably it was just a hiccup in the machine.
If it's not reproducable, how could we be of assistance.
Means: how could anyone tell that the problem is gone, or still existent?

My guess is, as you indicated already a faulty RAM-module, or too much RAM (more than 3 GByte on a 32 Bit OS)

This info slightly contradicts the "fully patched" and the "as of last sunday" contradicts the "no changes".

I'm not sure what that would prove, as the error was not repeatable without the repair.

The PC is very stable and not prone to "hiccups".
    1GB RAM.
    Where/when did I indicate a faulty RAM?
    Diagnostics show no problem.

My guess: A program error. In DVDP.

Not at all. It indicates a program error in the program dvdpro.exe: trying to address storage beyond its domain, i.e. at address 00004. FYI, dvdpro is DVDProfiler.

to be an program error other users should experience the same problem with the same error.
My guess: an environmental problem related to your hardware and operating system and it's configuration.

I run Windows update religously every Sunday -- no pun intended!
re no changes: I had been running the program off and on for several days without problem after the update, which was some run-of-the-mill stuff:

Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB954154)  Sunday, September 14, 2008 Microsoft Update
Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB938464)  Sunday, September 14, 2008 Microsoft Update

re other users, experience same problem: Not necessarily. It does depend on a multitude of factors, including the ones you guessed at. Add to those: My DVDP configuration and collection. But it's pretty clearly a programming error in DVDP, as indicated by the error message. DVDP should be able to handle all those factors without falling over.

re environmental problem: I don't think so -- at least no problem that affects the many other applications that I use.

If you are still on SP2 as your sig indicates goto SP3
Operating System Name Windows XP Home
Operating System Version Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp.080413-2111)

as I indicated to other users: check your computer's software with Secunia PSI
