Unable to make entries in these fields for certain items. Collections seem to be particularly prone to this. I cannot navigate the cursor to these fields to make data entry. I have tried at least two routes to the same dialog: CTL+P and Select+Personalize.

Example (in my online collection): The Coen Brothers Movie Collection

There must be disc info in the profile in order to access the Location/Slot fields. Why would one need Location/Slot if there are no discs assigned to the profile .

I guess location could be "second book shelf, third shelf" and slot "129"... whatever...

Makes sense to me - you can still have a location for a boxset even though we don't have disc info in the profile.
And there are still a lot of normal DVD profiles that have never had discs added either.

Edit: but as Max says, you need to add at least one disc to the profile to access those fields. You don't need to add any info, just click the "add disc" button on the discs in the edit profile window.

It woke me from my nap: What was it that made these collections different from my other items? I thought that it was having Box Set Content. Close, but no cigar. Yes, it is having no discs.

This may have been intended as a feature (How can you have a location if you have no discs?) but it smells more like a bug than a feature. If I want to specify a location for the box set, I should be able to do that, whether discs are indicated or not. The restriction (no discs, no location) seems "almost useful" to me.

Location and slot were added in response to people wanting to keep track of discs in multi-disc changers, so requiring a disc to be present in the profile fit that scenario. So, yes, it is a feature not a bug.

Perhaps I'm being dense, but I don't see how that scenario leads to the requirement "no disc, no location".

Because multi-disk changers only hold disks, not cases or boxes.

Could this be changed, yes, but this is how it works now.

Referenced thread does not explain why it was felt necessary to require a disc to be defined in the DVDP item for location information to be entered. What harm would there be if location is entered and no disc? None, I say. (Am I wrong?)

On the other hand, there are quite a lot of profiles in the database without disc info. Also, some disc ID's can not be read (copy protection, Amazon's recent DVD-R releases).
As indicated before, the fields can be "activated" by entering a disc (title) without actually providing a disc ID, but it seems an unnecessary restriction, and has confused many users.
If it's a feature, I for one could do without.

I discovered even the title of the disc is not needed to access the Location/Slot fields.

You have gotten the answer,dav4is, twice previously and now a third. It was setup in response to people wanting to use the system for Multi-disc changers. You cannot fit a BOX into a disc changer, unless you have some magic that i don't know about...wonder how it plays.   Could it be setup differently, certainly, but thus far it is what it is. Its for disc changers.

I am very sorry it is not the answer you want to receive...but it IS the answer.

Now here's a question for you, since I presume that the Boxset will be stored an shelf with the movies IN IT. You can create location data for the boxset contents. It seems a tads repetitive and perhaps even confusing to create a location for BOTH the Box and the Contents. Me, I will cretae the Location data for the contents and the Box will be in the SAME place,<scratches head>

That is hardly an answer to my question in re WHY it was necessary to PREVENT entry of location in the absence of disc info.
Reference to the design of some physical equipment is not an answer -- or rather is an inanity.  Perhaps I want to specify the location of the empty box (of a box set).

And up until the recent beta, it wouldn't have been possible to read the disc IDs for blu ray discs.

So yes, the restriction is pointless. And achieves nothing. I use it to number my shelves for instance.
