While I was ordering “Boomerang’, ‘Moontide’ and ‘Road House’, Sept. 1, 2008, I ordered another film
set of the noir genre, ‘A Blueprint for Murder / Man in the Attic’.

‘A Blueprint for Murder and Man in the Attic’ were released Sept. 2, 2007, and are older films and
relatively easy to profile, so I proceeded to profile them.

When I checked the existing profile for these two films against the DVDs I found a number of cast and
crew members that did not exist in the film credits and were not marked as uncredited. I checked
them against the IMDB listings and found that both cast and crew lists in the profiled were an exact
copies of the IMDB listings.

The contribution notes stated that data was taken from the discs. I wonder how many others are out
there.

I can understand this occurring for profiles carried over from the old site, but not profiles entered since
Invelos came into existence.
We don't need stinkin' IMDB's errors, we make our own.

The sad fact is people are being dishonest in their notes.  They claim they got the information from the disc, but really didn't.

I agree,, and what I usually do in a case like that is I check the 'contribution notes and approval dates' , and if it is an Invelos ID  name I recognise,. I'd usually pay more attention to their forth coming contributions in the near future...

I have come across some as well over here in R2 UK land, I just edit the profile resubmit put into my notes what I had found and where, then let the voters decide, they can then see for themselves where they originated from.

But then again when it was decided that you had to specify where you were getting the information from, a lot of people were coming to the forum's complaining that their contributions were being declined because "data appears to come from a third party DB", there were several people telling them how to get around it, instead of telling them how to do it properly, via the DVD credits ONLY.

Very simple, if the credits don't martch, remove the data that is not credited. Don't simply mark it (uncredited). It is a shame that we have some less honest users, but look at the bright side, once you know who the are....

Also regrettable to see what Steve describes, and we have users who are trying to innocently assist users by teaching them to run before they can even walk, that is a recipe for disaster.

I know.. I would just tell people to just details exactly where they found the information - but others would tell them to write that it came from the credits.

I think if someone contributed IMDB data and deliberately lied in their contribution notes, they should be reported to Ken/Gerri.  Perhaps they can send a warning or simply suspend them.  Plus they may also have a way to look at their other contributions to see if this was a one time offense or a pattern of abuse.

I always thought it was a shame that new contributions never go up for a vote.
If everyone was able to see and vote on new contributions for their own locality, I'm sure that would help.
Either that or we don't allow cast and crew at all on new contributions.

Since new contributions go live so quickly now, it shouldn't take long for other users to catch bad contributions and upload corrections which WILL be up for voting purposes.  Granted it's not an ideal situation, but it's much better than it used to be.

As xyrano wrote in another thread:
Quote:
The contribution system is built upon faith

and that's where the problem starts, if I don't see obvious errors in a contribution I believe that it's correct. I simply don't have the time to countercheck every contribution (but who has?). So "bad" profiles are still likely to pass through unnoticed.
On the other hand if a user finds out about masscopies of third party material and publishes this in the forum, it's quite likely that even then nothing happens.
Latest example: The Dark Crystal. On 08/06 I informed about the error and described how the false profiles could be recognized. Today, one month later only two profiles have been corrected.
So much for that.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

It is built on faith, true enough, however there are enough of us, that user who wants to misrepresent his notes is not going to do so for long, one of us will find him out and the PM system works very effectively.

I'm not sure that voting on new profiles would solve these problems.

That will be opening the door for votes on a dvd  you don't own and you don't have in hands.
How are you suppose to evaluate the covers, features, languages, overview, etc?

The solution to this problem will more likely involves adding new screeners to each locality.  So they have less dvds in the queue to approve and be able to look more closely at the information.

That door is already open - you can vote for items in your wish list: e.g. you don't have to own the title to vote on in...
