An interesting article from the people at Engadget

However, this also has a link to "Sound and Vision Magazine" which has much more info

But good news for PS3 users, who (like me) mainly use it for movie playback
Signature? We don't need no stinking... hang on, this has been done... blast [oooh now in Widescreen]
Ah... well you see.... I thought I'd say something more interesting... but cannot think of anything..... oh well

Are they seriously claiming the PS3's performance can even come close to e.g. the two new Denon players? What a joke!

did you even read the article?

One of the factors they included was the frequent firmare updates.

Sure I did. But I was talking about performance, i.e. the quality of video and audio output, which is what I would use to decide about a reference player (as almost every reviewer would). But hey, each to his own!

Have you USED or SEEN a PS3 in action playing a blu-ray? No, then try it out!

I'm not taking away anything from the qualities of the PS3, which are indeed impressive. I just would not consider it "the" reference player at this time any longer - meanwhile there are players out there with better video and audio output, such as the Denons I was referring to. It's like in sports: today's champion will be surpassed tomorrow.

How is the video output surpasssed? It's still 1080p? The audio is still lossless as (if) encoded on the disc?

What am I missing?

I too would like to see some hard data on how the Denons are better.  I'm not denying it of course.  But I need something more than a price tag here to convince me.

Here's the critical line in the article for me: "All we initially wanted was a high-quality consumer-grade lab," says Chris. "We didn't realize that we'd end up with a system that could be used to QC our D5 master tapes."

If Criterion is happy, i'm happy!

For video output, a more focused laser can yeild a better picture.  The audio, via HDMI, on the other hand, is still bit for bit identical.  Therefore, only level matching is needed between bitstreaming and decoding the audio internally.

To answer your question, you aren't missing much of anything.

Correct me please, if I am wrong:

- The video (and audio) on a blu-ray disk is a compressed stream of data.
- The laser in the player is used to read the data from the disk.
- The Player uncompresses the data and send's it via HDMI to the TV, projector, Audio Equipment,... whatever.

A defocused laser would produce read errors, which results in decoding errors and affects video and audio quality.

On the other hand, if the laser works correct, than there are no read errors and video and audio replay can not be enhanced by a sharper or more focused laser.

IMHO a better image processing may yield a better picture. A more focused laser affects either both, video and audio replay or none of them.

The PS3 will never even come close to the quality of the upcoming Denon Players or the new Pioneer LX71..
I personally think that the PS3 ranks below a lot of other Blu Ray Players. And besides, it can't even output sound via bitstream

For those who understand German:
here's a thorough review of the Denon DVD-2500BT.
Guess what? They conclude it's reference class...
