Yeasterday i bought a DVD movie ("Malcolm X") and wanted to enter it in my DVD profiler. I couldn't find it on the EAN number, so I added it by searching the Title.

Then I changed the EAN number, replaced the Disc Info (reading Disc Info from DVD) and also scanned the covers (the front was excactly the same, but the back was different) and contributed the DVD profile.

It was declined with reason "Use of a third party database is not allowed per the contribution rules.".
But all information (except my changes) came from an already online DVD profile - is that a "third party database" ?

A third party database refers to sites such as IMDB. You should re-submit your contribution citing the source for the data. In the case, the source would be the profile that you based your profile on. You need to specifically cite these sources of your information in the contribution notes

e.g "Profile, including Cast and Crew taken from Region 1 UPC xxxxx already contributed and approved. All other information taken from disc"

Did you checked the data of the profile your contribution based on? Perhaps it contains data from a 3rd party database (IMDb) and it "slipped through".

I agree never simply copy data from another copy of the title, always check the data against the real source, the disc(film)

Ok, I check that the data matches the actual DVD.
Thanks.

I just checked the profile (quite easy since there's only one "Malcolm X"-profile for Denmark) and it's highly likely that this is a carbon copy of IMDB data. You can recognize this by the numeration of roles, when the "#" shows up it's almost always IMDB.
So change this "#" to "No." and the profile should pass. Please check the "uncredited" actors too. If you're not sure that they really appear in the movie leave them.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

just to clarify this. The secret is not to try and sneak in IMDB data by making artificial changes. Id the crew/cast looks like its from IMDB then you should remove it completely. The crew/cast should be checked against the DVD and only after this has been checked should it be submitted.

You're absolutely right!
I'm sorry if my post was understood as a guideline to sneaking in IMDB-data.
But Duelund wrote that he/she checked the data, so maybe (but not likely) the credits really show the "#". The correct way in this case would have been of course to note this in the contribution notes. But you know how it goes, nobody writes that he's just contributing an IMDB carbon copy. Everything's (Of course) rechecked by your own DVD.

EDIT: To show Duelund that the contribution may not be entirely correct I hinted at the uncredited actors, which are always suspicious if they show up in a new profile.

EDIT AGAIN: Just checked: The Profile definitely is an IMDB-clone. For comparison check here (IMDB) against UPC 5-706102-358975. It's a 100% match and should be completely rebuilt
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!

Hi again guys,
I totally agree and will check the DVD against the profile.

But - sometimes the information on the DVD is very vague, where IMDB is more precise. Often on DVD's are only the actors name listed, not the character he/she is playing. Should I then only list the actors and not the characters ?

Just enter what you find in the end credits from the movie on dvd for cast and their roles.
Sources for one or more of the changes and/or additions were not submitted. Please include the sources for your changes in the contribution notes, especially for cast and crew additions.

From the Contribution Rules:

If an actor is credited by name but does not have an associated role, you may use another source to identify the role.

So, no, you can add a character name (but if it's a TV series I beg you try to be consistent across seasons because otherwise it's really annoying... well fo me anyway )
It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong

Be careful, Voltaire, TV is not necessarily consistent within a Season, let alone across them, we don't necessarily create consistency unless it is something you want to do locally. If the TV show is inconsistent in their data presentation.... which more often than not they are.

I agree... lots can happen between seasons... so will not always be consistent.
