A recent problem I've come across is where to put my DVDs, so I thought I'd see what other people think of doing ..

Personally, I'm storing them in a number of places around the house til I can buy another bookcase .. once that's filled though don't know the next step ... maybe a larger house

i recently encountered this problem, it was solved by selling off about 100 discs that i really didnt need but just bought because of a super low price... and donating about 15 shelf feet of books to the local library...

BLASPHEMY sir!

I was out of ideas of where to put any more DVDs so, I just purchased a bigger home a few months ago.
No. Really!

Ok, so it was kind of a coincindence in time, but... it solved my problem
...so far.

I've just culled some 700 + DVDs, and it's taken the pressure off the storage problem, although I have about 1000 boxed and stored in my brothers' garage!

About once a year or so we thin out the collection of stuff we either no longer want.  First, we offer them up on HTF, then take them to a place that buys used DVDs or to a garage sale of someone we know.

Another thing we did recently was purchase some DVD storage "baskets" at Ikea. We can get 4 of them on a shelf putting them long-ways in, which buys us an extra 8 inches per shelf. We have 3 shelves set up that way, plus 3 drawers filled with DVDs (the baskets aren't as efficient in the drawers).

I'm very close to implementing some sort of binder system and putting the cases in storage.  I haven't noticed my spending habits changing much over the years and shelving issues are inevitable.

Personally, I would love to get a Kaleidescape system, but man that's a lot of money.

Has anybody had any hands-on experience with this system?

What I do is make multi pack dvd covers, replacing the three 2 disc / 3 case sets with a slim 6 disc single case for the entire set.

This gets back 66% of my shelf space for more dvds.

Another not to cheap filing system can be found here.
I'd prefer the "Lateral Rolling System" but that's only me, my wife prefers to move them into the cellar. This quite difficult, because up to now there is none in our house, so I'd better start digging.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

That's pretty cool! But for this solution you should buy a very big shovel:
