I've just read that midsummer thread on the Hamletlike issue of Titles: So where do we need to get "Title" from ?

I see there are different opinions and different interpretations of the Contribution Rule on Titles, but I don't want to hash that old ground here.

Instead, maybe a simple new feature could settle all discussions and avoid confusion and inconsistencies in the database?
What if Ken gave us one, or even two, new fields to play with?
What do you think?

1. 'Film Title' as it is in the film's credits.
Example: The Party.
2. 'Cover Title', literally as it is printed on the cover, if different.
Example: Peter's Seller's The Party.
3. 'Alternative (AKA) Title'.
Example: Hollywood Party.
4. 'Original Title' for foreign films.
Example: The Party, if you buy it in a country where the title is translated to local language, and in that case use the local language title in fields 1 and 2.

Anyway, if you think that would mean too much fuss for the online database, rechecking old contributions and so on, the new field(s) could be made local only, for those who like keeping track of more information.

One more thought: the workaround of using the 'Original Title' field for an alternative title may fit for some but not for all. In particular, it doesn't work with foreign movies, that need that field for the "true" Original Title. Of course, if you don't own foreign movies or only buy them from the country of origin, that won't be much of a problem!

Right now we have fields for 'Cover Title' and 'Screen Title'. The field called 'Title' is filled in with the 'Cover Title' and the field called 'Original Title' gets the 'Screen Title'. For most films this is all we need.

By the way Skip and John, if you don't want to play, just go back in your corners and stop posting to the threads!

Are you going to flame-bait as well!!!!!!!!!! This topic has been discused numerous times, and I believe, I could be wrong that there has been a poll on it. Do we really need to go through all of this every few weeks or months.? THAT is my point.

Perhaps once the rule finally gets fixed this can get put to bed.  How far along is the rules committee on this one?

My understanding is that is an interpretation, not a Rule.

Anyway, where would you enter the Original Title of a foreign movie.

And where exactly does it say that in the Rules?

It does not, but the modified title rules say:
Quote:
Modified Titles: The Original Title field will contain the original theatrical title, while the Title field will contain the title of the DVD release.  For instance, for the Special Edition rerelease of There's Something About Mary:

    * Title: There's Something More About Mary
    * Original Title: There's Something About Mary

And the foreign title rules say:
Quote:
Foreign Films: The Original Title field will contain the original title for the main feature in the country of origin.  i.e. A German DVD release for a film originally produced in the United States would have the German title in the Title field and the English title in the Original Title Field.

So if both titles are the same, no problem. If they are not one of these rules will move the title on the case into the 'Title' field and the title on the screen into the 'Original Title' field.

I think we need a fifth title added.  One for possessory credits + title so we can finally put a stop to those stupid arguments about The Birds and It's a Wonderful life.  Along with an option to optionally display it as the title.

Of course if I was Ken I'd say this is complicating the database too much and just find a way to deal with it.  I think the number of users who really care about this level of detail probably numbers in the 20's or 30's.  Adding this kind of data to the database would only serve to drive away more contributors.

Appologies to all the non-R1 users in advance.

Forgetting about foreign film titles for the moment (those are a given), the modified title Rule is being invoked to use whatever is on the DVD cover in the Title filed way too often.  The example given in the Rules was supposed to give an indication as to how this Rule should be applied.  Applying it because there are quotation marks in one place and not the other, or for possessory credits, or other things that are on the cover but clearly are NOT part of the title, is an abuse of the intent of the modified title Rule, IMHO!

If you want to use the DVD cover as the sole source of the Title field, then you should lobby Ken for a change in the Rules to state that.

Right now they say:  "Use the title from the film's credits."
