| Posted: | | | | Hrm, in retrospect, I should be picked a more distinguishing title for the poll. I guess the number of pages attached to it and the poll icon should be enough. |

Sony still has a long way to go with their format. IMO. But to answer the question that prompted this poll: no I do not hate BD. When they first started out (horribly) I'll admit that I did. | | | Erik

| Posted: | | | | I technically haven't gone HD yet, but I have purchased a few HD movies in the HD-DVD format. One was because that's the only HD format 'Serenity' was released in. And I bought 300 because it was a dual format release so I could still watch it regular DVD and also have it for HD later. Since Blu-ray is not doing any dual format releases I will not be purchasing any of them until after I pick up a player.
And speaking of the player, I plan on purchasing a dual-format HD player this Christmas because as a consumer I don't want to have to deal with this stupid corporate e-penis war which will go on for several years. I'd rather buy whatever movie I want in whatever format it comes out in and if it's both then choose the one that has the most bang for the buck, be it whichever format.
If I had to choose sides it would be HD-DVD, but only because of Sony's history of sticking it to the consumer. Toshiba is probably not much better, but they haven't been in the news every few months with crazy news stories (screwing music artists out of royalties, DRM rootkits, exploding laptop batteries, etc). Plus I just find it amusing that after the whole VHS/Betamax war and losing, that Sony is trying it once again. A lot of consumers got screwed in the original war and here they are going at it again in Format WWII. Why everyone just couldn't come together like they did for DVD is beyond me. | | | "Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men" - Douglas Bader "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." - Douglas Adams |

| Posted: | | | | I don't have any hardware preferences, both my players do an equally good job of delivering a fine HD experience, but the software has been very disappointing so far on Blu-ray. They have very few exclusive titles that interest me and rather poor specs (the only exception so far has been PotC). I hope this changes now when Fox and MGM is back in business, or my investment in both formats will look rather ill spent... | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 | | | Last edited: by Nexus the Sixth |

| Posted: | | | | I'll stick with my two upscaling OPPOs DV-981HD (1080p) & DV-971HD (1080i). I've been reading all the reviews and nobody seems doing all that could to put out a product worth the money their asking along and without any clear direction where it will end up. TVs, I've had better luck with Sony than Toshiba. I have two Sony TV's now HD-LCD I've never owned a Sony DVD player, but have a Sony and a Memorex DVD/CD drives in my PC. I go through one about every year, I'm sure they would last longer if I wasn't collecting DVD's and entering them the Profiler The Toshiba DVD player I had is kept for back up and was nothing to brag about. | | | We don't need stinkin' IMDB's errors, we make our own. | Posted: | | | | Err. I just discovered I posted the below in the wrong thread. Here it is again. My apologies to those who've already read it. I buy a fair chunk of my movies from outside North America, and with HD DVD being region free by default, my preference for that format really is a no brainer. And sure, I'm aware that could possibly change, but I'm not going to pick a side based on what might be, I'm going to base it on what is. And as it is, HD DVD is more friendly towards the region free consumer. KM | | | Tags, tags, bo bags, banana fana fo fags, mi my mo mags, TAGS! Dolly's not alone. You can also clone profiles. | Posted: | | | | This far I have only bought BD, and only a few as I am new to this format...
But after the news resently I am thinking of a HD-DVD player also, the movies offered has to be the driving factor, as films in both format is wanted in the collection, and there is no sight of every film coming to both formats... | | | We are all at the same age, only at different time... |

| Posted: | | | | I have both, picture & sound quality on the same films is close enough to identical for me given that the same source material and proper transfer & pressing processing was used. I'll usually read a few reviews of a disc before I buy it. The Toshiba HDA-20 has functioned flawlessly so far. Sony SBD (silent but...)S300 is quirky in operation, it likes to tell me I can't do this or that at this time or that time, or perhaps anytime. I use an OPPO 981 for my Standard Def discs (there's one company I would love to see come up with a combi player for both Hi-Def formats). I run all 3 HDMI/DVI into an Pioneer 50" monitor so I can run all 3 at the same time and compare the 3 types. | | | Last edited: by FLighT |

| Posted: | | | | I haven't invested in either, and I doubt I will until we get closer to a winner. I don't see the need to invest in two formats. I'm not so absolutely starved to see Transformers in hi-def at home that I want to blow $500 to get up and running in a format that most directors seem to loathe, for example, and a hi-def Close Encounters is hardly justification to blow $800 to get up and running in a proprietary format that seems to be lagging slightly.
It has changed my DVD buying habits, however. I'm spending a lot more time buying classics and grindhouse/exploitation movies. There just isn't likely to be a hi-def version of "The Apartment" anytime soon, and I doubt there's even a film source to restore "Master of the Flying Guillotine" to hi-def, for example. If something comes out that I feel I absolutely must watch, I'll get it (300, for example), but I don't beat myself up over not being able to see it in hi-def. I figure a year from now we'll have a better idea of what's going to survive. |
