| Posted: | | | | Announcement! We have a names database: DVD Profiler "Credited As" Name DatabaseMany thanks to our friend Andy (Lopek) for designing and hosting this resource. You may continue to post your data here and the information will be updated to the database. If you are interested in helping maintain the database, drop me a PM. Definitions:Each Cast and Crew member may have up to 2 name components per entry: One is the Name and the other is the Credited As name. Name = Defined in the Contribution Rules as "the person's name". The slang phrase for this has been "common name"; however, that's not what the name is called in the program. It's just the Name, comprised of first, middle, and last fields. Credited As = This is the name as credited in the credits of the program content (film, TV show, etc). If the credited name differs from "the person's name", utilize the Credited As field. Update: May 8, 2008
The Working Guidelines for this database have changed. Originally, this was planned to help us determine which name is the correct name. Subsequent developments here at Invelos have been that we are to use the Credit Lookup Tool to determine the most-frequently credited name. That is what we have to use for the name. All other names will be "credited as" names.
You may find names in this database that differ from current Credit Lookup Tool results. If so, please post the discrepancy here and we'll update this database to reflect the proper most-credited name from the Credit Lookup Tool.
This database is useful to provide documentation for you to use when you make a contribution if you need to prove that 2 names are the same person. But as mentioned above, the Credit Lookup Tool determines which name to use.
Previous working guidelines are saved below for historical purposes only. They do not supercede the results of the Credit Lookup Tool:Quote: Working guidelines:
1. Poll If a person is sometimes credited with a nickname in the middle of their name in quotes, the Name does not include it; utilize Credited As (example Robert Zajonc not Robert 'Bobby Z' Zajonc) 2. If a person is more widely known using only a nickname, then the nickname can be used as a Name (example: The Rock) 3. Poll If a person has accents in their name, then the Name includes them even if they are more commonly credited without (this is out of simple courtesy, I'd hate it if my name was spelled wrong) 4. Poll Updated If a person's credited name has changed due to marriage, use the most credited form. Exceptions can be discussed on a case-by-case basis. 5. If possible do not include initials in the Name where a full name is known (example: John Paul Sanderson not John P. Sanderson) However a person who only uses initials is fine (D.B. Sweeney) 6. Poll For Jr. and Sr., use a comma before the suffix. Use Jr. and Sr. instead of birth year to distinguish. 7. Poll Do not include prefixes in the Name; utilize Credited As field. 8. Poll Always include a period/full stop after an initial in a Name. 9. Link When adding Chinese/Hong Kong cast or crew names where the family name is normally shown first, place the given name in "first name" and the family name in "last name" and used "credited as" to show what's actually credited. For example, Chow Yun-Fat would be parsed as Yun-Fat//Chow credited as "Chow Yun-Fat". | | | ...James

| Posted: | | | | For number 6, you may want to specify the period at the end of the suffix as well. | | | Hal |

| Posted: | | | | Why dosen't someone make a post "Common Names Here" or something and everyone that has a common name to add just edit that post and add their names using a common format. Would make it so much easier to find names that having to search this thread. | | | My WebGenDVD online Collection |

| Posted: | | | | I think the idea is that James adds the names we post to his 2nd post, so that's where the list will be. We can't edit other people's posts so we can't add them ourselves. | | | Last edited: by northbloke |

| Posted: | | | | Of course there will be exceptions, they're only guidelines thought up on the spot, and still open for discussion. If you like the guideline as a rule, but want this name to be different - sure why not, as long as the community agrees with you (which I think they will on this occasion if I remember the way the other thread was going). |

| Posted: | | | | @ North and James. Thanks guys. I just wanted to be sure there was room to work with. I am willing to work on a solution here. As I said in another thread, this ship has sailed. We might as well try and make the voyage as smooth as possible. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
