I can see myself running into a bunch of these I'm not sure of, if anyone could help, that would be grand! Help yourselves to posting here too.

Here's my list so far:
Lord of the Rings --- New Zealand?
The Dreamers (2003)

Well, that's it. It'll grow.

Because it was filmed there does not necessarily mean that New Zealand is the country of origin, does it?

Hmm, the country of origin should be where the production companies are based, don't you think?
Bye,

Yes, that is the intention, Lord of the Rings would be US. It is where the production companies are based.

Elwood Blues is right.

When you're browsing, it appears next to the date ('YYYY in COUNTRY'), assuming the field isn't blank.

I guess I'll go with US on both of those then.

I agree, there should be at least 3 fields for the country of origin. Otherwise this might result in some kind of "Ping Pong" for profiles with multiple production companies...

What about the country stated at the IMDB? Easy to check.

For the example of Lord of the Rings it says: New Zealand / USA
Production Companies are: New Line Cinema (USA) and WingNut Films (New Zealand)
New Line is the releasing company, so USA?

Another Example: Romeo + Julia: USA
Life's like a movie, write your own ending.

Actually at least one part of LotR was co-produced by a German company.

How about Subtitle/Regions-style check box where you can select multiple countries?

Or same as now but two more, like Studios?

I was surprised this new field was added to 3.0, I hadn't noticed much pressure in the IVS forums on the subject, and have been waiting for the first post about identifying the origins accurately and consistently.

This is going to be one of those areas where a lot of arguments will happen and potential ping-ponging of contributions, unless a definitive rule is advised on how we should identify the first country of origin.

The listing of subtitles and regions is not comparable IMO, as these can be checked on the cover and verified by testing the disc on your PC. Not the case for identifying accurate countries of origin.

Older hollywood films will be easy to identify, but new blockbusters can use several production companies in different areas of the films, potentially from several different countries. Not sure if this is the definitive way to identify it...

One guesses the country the film would pay tax to would be the country of origin, but how do you find that out on all films?

Looks like a nest of vipers this one, and an area that may need a definitive rule Gerri - good luck

Sounds like making it more complicated than it is. Especially with more modern movies, though often co-produced and financed with companies from various countries, most of us shouldn't have trouble identifying the CoO [that is the persisitent one].

The possibility to define several, as with subtitles or, better yet, studios should take care of borderline cases. If Mr Cole decides to change it that way.

Going back to The Lord of the Rings, if we're using production company then that would mean country of origin is New Zealand - WingNut's base. New Line are the distributor and supplied the dosh!
