Some forum users may find it amusing, even entertaining, reading the constant barrage of insults and mudslinging that goes on in many of the threads on these forums but I for one am getting tired of it as I’m sure many of you are as well. Not only does this behavior detract from the usefulness of the forum but it probably scares the heck out of newcomers and discourages their participation. Don’t get me wrong…I’m just as guilty as the next.

Might I suggest a “Check your Ego at the Door” sign when signing on to the forums? Also, I know Ken has suggested moderating the forums with volunteers but until then, perhaps Ken can institute a “Time Out” function in the forums? Any time a user utters an insult at another user, the insulter gets an automatic 10 minute “Time Out” from the forums? I’m sure this would make some of the, shall we say, more prolific insulters think twice before calling so-and-so an idiot, moron, or some other colorful metaphor.

This of course is tongue-in-cheek…but I think everyone should consider moderating themselves a little better in the forums. After all, we are adults, aren’t we?

Ehh, wouldn't we need moderators to give users the 10 minutes ban? Or do you suggest you as a user can impose it on other members you feel insultet you?

I know you write "automatic*, but unless natural language processing leaped forward with 50 years of development while I looked the other way, I doubt that will work.

I was thinking along the lines of an auto-system boot as it were. I know the forums have filters for foul language that replaces those words with @$#%#. Perhaps Ken can create a list of insults that the system can filter on and automatically eject the offender from the forums for 10 minutes .

You do understand that this is all in fun (at least most of it) right?

If the biggest poster would act like an adult this would be a far better place.

But I guess that to fling insults into a thread and then follow it with a complaint that "others have no logic in their claims, so they must resort to insults" is the height of internet debate.

Good idea. I'd also like to see a "Mark Forums Read" option somewhere.

Nice try, Max, but it would take about 15 seconds to get around the filter.

I noticed though, that out of the first 10 responses to your message, nearly half were in response to one that was a potshot at Skip.  Seems to me that for all the bitching about acrimony and attitudes and such that somebody always starts the ball rolling by blaming Skip (or me) for not going with the flow.

Just for the record, I can say that it gets awful hard to resist nasty remarks when you've been on the receiving end for as long as we have been.  I have also noticed that people seem to have a very large inability to understand sarcasm and cynicism in a post, immediately jumping to the "he's attacking me" response mode.  A sarcastic response or comment is not an attack.

It's a two way street, in other words.  If people expect to not be treated that way, then they have to stop treating others that way as well.  That applies to ALL of us.

I am all for this. But I would say this should be 24 hours, not only 10 minutes. I don't think people care if it's just only 10 minutes. This behaviour must be discouraged. This one of the reasons I rarely engage in a debate. Because I know if I say my opinion, some of the users will jump on me with insults and worse. I want to take a part in this community, but only if these persons stops with the insults.

God, I hope there will be some moderators here soon.

And what makes you and Rifter think I was posting about you?

Rifter claims that there is a post about you, but I don't see a 'Skip' anywhere.

Why do you think this is all about you?
