When entering cast, we enter it in the order they are credited in the actual credits in the movie. Great, but when we print reports, I guess I'm not the only one who would like the "best known" of the cast to be listed first, regardless.

So, how about an opportunity to prioritize individual cast members, and then when we do a report, we can select to do it with the highest prioritized cast-members listed first?

My guess is that these priorities should probably be kept local, but I would think that I'm not the only one that would like Winona Ryder to be listed as the second cast-member in the report for The Darwin Awards, even though she's quite a long way down on the credits...

I have started using dividers to accomplish this in my local db. I use the order of the opening credits first followed by the order of the closing credits. Here's an example from Tempest:

John Cassavetes as Phillip
Gena Rowlands as Antonia
Susan Sarandon as Aretha
Vittorio Gassman as Alonzo
Raul Julia as Kalibanos
Jerry Hardin as Harry
Anthony Holland as Sebastian
Jackie Gayle as Trinc
Lucianne Buchanan as Dolores
Paul Stewart as Phillip's Father
Molly Ringwald as Miranda
Sam Robards as Freddy

Divider: End Credits
Sergio Nicolai as First Sailor
Luigi Laezza as Second Sailor
Vassilis Glezakos as Greek Boat Captain
Lucianne Buchanan as Dolores
Jerry Hardin as Harry
Anthony Holland as Sebastian
Jackie Gayle as Trinc
Paul Stewart as Phillip's Father
Sam Robards as Freddy
Molly Ringwald as Miranda
Raul Julia as Kalibanos
Vittorio Gassman as Alonzo
Susan Sarandon as Aretha
Gena Rowlands as Antonia
John Cassavetes as Phillip
Carol Ficatier as Gabrielle
Peter Lombard as Mackenzie
Cynthia Harris as Cynthia
Paul Hecht as Paul
Mark Soper as Mark
Murray Grand as Piano Player
Paul Mazursky as Terry Bloomfield
Betsy Mazursky as Betsy Bloomfield
Fred Pasternack as Doctor
Nadine Darling as First Nurse
Nina Kolment as Second Nurse
John Marolakos as N.Y. Greek Cafe Owner
George Moscaidis as Athens Cafe Owner
Camille Lefko as Casino Security Guard
Jerry Hewitt as Stuntman
Barry Mitchell as Woody Allen Lookalike
Al Cerullo as Helicopter Pilot
Theodoros Kavalieros as Night Club MC
Sheila Ozden as Belly Dancer
Nicos Mousoullis as Deck Hand on Boat
Evanthia Glezakou as Old Woman on Boat
Clint Chin as Chinese Plane Steward
Stella Nastou as Secretary on Yacht
Rudy Cherney as Man with Pigeons
Thanasis Pagonis as Greek Cafe Waiter
...James

The problem I see about this is how to determine which actor is more popular than another?

I was wondering the same thing, Doc. Based on whose definition of popularity and well-known. This seems to be a purely subjective issue and I can't imagine how the program could be written to accomodate it, I am afraid this could only be done on strictly local basis using whatever system and criteria the user wishes.

I would suggest a flag per credit which states that the actor has been credited not only in the normal credits (usually end credits sorted by appearance or alphabetically) but also in the "star credits" (usually the opening credits).

Cast/crew on the dvd covers should have priority! It's not subjective, because every film is focusing other prioritizing actors. I cannot understand why supporting actors should be listed above the leading actors. On the other hand I would not appreciate alphabetical orders. Just my thoughts...

I too prefer that my cast lists have the 'top name' actors listed first regardless of whether they were credited that way in the film or not - especially when it comes to reports.  Perhaps similar to James' method I reorder casts as necessary to achieve this, but instead of using credits shown at the beginning of the film to determine what names are listed first, I try to always us the billing block if I can find it. Those listed before the title get top billing in my local. This billing block is very often found on the back of the DVD case anyway. So Skip and Don, you can see that in both methods - mine or James' - it isn't really a purely subjective issue at all as we do have a repeatable method to this re-ordering.  But I'm not promoting this method as one for the online db.

That said, because I may deviate from DVDP's rules for cast list order, any titles where I've changed it from the way they appeared in the closing credits becomes a title that I will not contribute (at least not include cast changes).

Not sure I follow you, Rho.

@Kahless this is the kind of subjectivity to which I refer. Opening and closing credits are not always in agreement, let alone the Cover which oft time contains information that is incorrect against the fil. The what happens when we have a user, a we will who disagrees with the billing in ANY credits and wants it some way to his liking. This is all a local matter not an Online issue at all.

Mike:

How do YOU define "top name" actor and what happens if YOUR defintion differes from someone else's. We have a mess and back we go to the days of inaccuracy planted by IMDb, why can't this be a Local issue, where you are free to do anything you wish, why does the Online have to be corrupted by such garbage and oh BTW as a side note...let's just throw out the Rules.

Though I am glad to see you keeping this local. I am curious about Rho's idea and trying to visualize how it would work on a local basis.

Excuse me, but didn't I just define how I determined top-name actors in my post?  Also, did I also not state that this is how I do it in MY LOCAL DB and that I believed it should remain strictly in as credited order in the online db?

Did you actually read what I'd written?

Edit: Ah, OK I see that you edited the last part of your post.

I was afraid of this - "Who is to say who is more popular?"

As I said in my first thread (apparantly nobody read that far), it should probably be kept local. So for my movies, I can define who should be listed first in my reports. Skip can define who should be listed first in his reports, and so on.

But again, you just prooved to me that some people here reads the forum like the devil reads the bible...

Out of curiosity James, does this not create an 'update available' every week because your local differs from the online?

I'll check that when I get home later. I don't often check the updates.

I can answer this....

It doesn't - if it did you would get an update available message for every profile where your local differed in any way from the online.

What it DOES do though is make accepting any cast update a little problematic - accepting a cast update will of course overwrite any local customization in that section.  If I do end up accepting such an update, I have to go back into edit mode on that title and move people around again.
