| Posted: | | | | I was quite dissapointed. 'B' movie at best. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom. Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand. The Centauri learned this lesson once. We will teach it to them again. Though it take a thousand years, we will be free. - Citizen G'Kar |

| Posted: | | | | Quoting Jason Buchanan at the All-Movie Guide: Quote: Often referred to as "The Shining in space," British director Paul Anderson's follow-up to the enormously popular Mortal Kombat (1995) also bears more than a passing resemblance to Stanislaw Lem's short-story Solaris (though with a decided slant towards the horrific). Unquestionably an exercise of style over substance, Event Horizon sustains it's running time and frequently shifting theories of time and space with solid performances by Laurence Fishburn and Sam Neil. As the captain of the ship sent to investigate the disappearance of the titular spacecraft and the creator of the said time-bending craft respectively, Fishburn and Neil lend much needed weight to a story that borrows heavily and frequently from multiple sources. Though the film is marked with a number of shocking images in addition to a handful of intriguing concepts, the languid pacing (likely an intentional effort to build a foreboding sense of dread) robs the film of the needed trajectory to truly penetrate the mind of the viewer. It often seems that as soon as the audience is drawn in to the admittedly horrifying concept of a connection with Hell by means of experimental dimension-shifting spacecraft, they are pulled from the dark hypnosis of the admittedly awe-inspiring production design through a series of implausibly drawn situations and questionable motivations on behalf of the characters. As previously mentioned, the menacing design of the Event Horizon and it's Notre Dame cathedral-inspired black heart are nearly enough to induce nightmares alone. This observations not withstanding, it's a shame that Anderson couldn't parlay the often involving story and talented actors into a more effective story. | | | If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

If you liked The Thing or Sphere, you'd probably like it. | | | Last edited: by Dr. Killpatient |

If you liked The Thing or Sphere, you'd probably like it. Yes, and that's why I have them together with Event Horizon in my collection. I also think The Abyss falls in the same category. | | | Martin Zuidervliet

What links the other three movies together is the unknown element that also poses a clear danger as perceived by the audience. I would probably pair up The Abyss with Cocoon. There is a very similar movie that fits the "dangerous unknown element" parameter but I can't quite place my name on it. Maybe it's Leviathan. | | | Last edited: by Dr. Killpatient |

There is a very similar movie that fits the "dangerous unknown element" parameter but I can't quite place my name on it. Maybe it's Leviathan. The story is a pretty regular sci-fi theme - vessel approaches planet/black hole/asteroid; influences crew members, possibly using them as a conduit; often the unknown force presents itself as God, Heaven, Hell, etc, but usually the writers cop-out and explain that it was only exploiting the human neurosis it found in the host. Solaris for starters, as mentioned in Cliff's post. 2001 maybe. Most recently, the Doctor Who episode a couple of weeks ago and one in a previous series (Satan's Pit?). Red Dwarf have done it and I'd bet you can find it a couple of dozen times in Star Trek! Certainly The Final Frontier fits. They thought they'd found God, while I think Event Horizon implies a gateway to Hell? Obviously Alien is a good source too. The theme is the same, although it is a physical, tangible force in that case. Mix 'em all up, you've got Event Horizon. | | | Jon "When Mister Safety Catch Is Not On, Mister Crossbow Is Not Your Friend."

| Posted: | | | | I remember great anticipation for this one, but being relatively disappointed in the end.
It does tap into a relatively common sci-fi theme, and though it tries hard it misses on several levels. I thought "Life Form" with Patrick Stewart was a much more original treatment, as was the "Species" series. I think it also missed on the horror aspect as well. It failed to grab you and drag you into the terror of the unknown the way "Alien" did, and even more with "Aliens."
I think this one tried to match the gothicness of "Bladerunner" to the inexorable terror of "Aliens" and the plot twists of "Species" and missed the mark on all accounts. | | | John

| Posted: | | | | Well, unlike many other posters - I really liked it. Its one of the few movies ( to me ) that actually projects an evil menace. I'm certainly no spring chicken and still get shivers when I watch it in the Dark late at night in an empty house! I still jump in my seat too. That doesn't happen that often in my case. I like Sam Neil. So I would actually rate this well above a "B" movie level. In my opinion there has not been much in the way of decent Science Fiction in the movies. This comes close, though I suppose its a horror/action movie that takes place in space is a closer description.
Buy it - I think its only $5-10 these days!!! | | | Last edited: by catheadman |
