| Posted: | | | | I feel we need a common ground regarding Country of Origin.
How do we decide which country to designate when there are multiple options (like 'A History of Violence' - Canada/USA; 'Alien' - UK/USA).
And where do we get this information from?
Any thoughts? | | | Berak

And how on earth do you suggest we decide which production company has used the most money on a project!!? Some independent films have like 20 different production companies associated to it.... | | | Berak

And by the way - New Line Cinema is a US Production Comany and Wingnut Films is a New Zealand company, so Northblokes answer would apply to LOTR (New Line is first credited)... | | | Berak

I go with the first one listed in the "A xyz Production" part of the credits, unless I can find evidence to the contrary. |

Any thoughts? One place I've found pretty reliable is TCMDB.com. Look up the movie using search, and in most cases the right side of page will list production information, including country of record. | | | John

New Line Cinema didn't produce the films. Wingnut did. New Line Cinema had the money, that's all. True. Peter Jackson went to New Line and pitched the movie. New Line hired Jackson and Wingnut to do it. They provided the money, without which it wouldn't have been made - certainly not the masterpiece we got at any rate! So definitely a US production. | | | John

Definitely a New Zealand production. Artistic vision is everything. The money could have come from anywhere. Yes, a lot of very talented New Zealand people worked on the LOTR trilogy of films. There is no question that N.Z. native Peter Jackson is the genius most responsible for the success of LOTR masterpieces. But who released the film? It was New Line Cinema. New Line Cinema was founded in the US, and is one of the major American film studios (now a a subsidiary of Time Warner). If LOTR should be considered a New Zealand production, why was it nominated (and subsequently won) numerous Academy Awards all in the the domestic categories, and none in the Foreign Film category? Do you also think that "Heavenly Creatures" should be considered a New Zealand, and not a U.K. production? |

When has the Academy Awards ever had anything to do with artistic expression? Just another case of American imperialism. "This is good, so it must be made in the good old US of A."
