I would really like to start using Linux more, but this is one of the programs that cant be used in it.

So just wondering if theres a demand for a Linux/Mac version, or am i alone with this one?

Ideally, Ken could rewrite it to make it platform independent so that it would run on almost anything.  That would allow Profiler to capture the Mac crowd and the Linux crowd as well as Windows.

Unbelieveable, whispering. Ken is ONE person, I doubt seriously if he could spare anytime to write either a Linux or a Mac version. You eother better get a whole bunch of users to buy the program so he can afford to hire another programmer or wreite it yourself.                 I am surprised that after all these users one of you Mac lovers haven't done that already, after all if there is enough users to buy it......NOT.

I don't know the answer but Delphi may not be able to do that.

The programming side of things isn't necessarily that intensive for multi-platform support - it's the testing that's the real %$££^. Although I doubt that it would be viable to officially support other OS, I'd really like to see some attempt to allow 'unofficial' support (e.g. get the core program running in WINE, ten state use is at users own risk).
This is a sig... ... ... yay...

Don't understand? Maybe DVDProfilerWiki.org does!

Not that I know much about it, but I hear that kylix can be used with delphi to allow the program to be compiled for both Windows and Linux with relative ease.

I use some weather software currently on windows which has a linux (kylix) version.

It's all written by 1 person, who has to interface it with many different weather stations which must be a real pain.

So, 1 person doing it, isn't the limiting factor. Also, he produces about 10-20 new releases a month. Although typically they have a few fixes/new features each.

As for the Mac, there is Crossover from CodeWeavers (which is based on Wine).

I don't know if it would run with that already, as my MacBook doesn't arrive until Tuesday... But if it doesn't, getting it "certified" for that might be easier, as CodeWeaver would also be commited to improve things at their end at the same time.

The previous version of DVD profiler was on their list of possible programs they might work for (here), but that didin't get very far yet, it seems. But if we (and even more Ken) were to support it, they will probably do their part.

I´m going to use Ubuntu (LINUX) as my standard system very soon and the DVD Profiler will become one of the last few reasons to keep up a boot partition with Win XP running. A working LINUX version in the near future would be very very great...

I, too, would love to be able to dump Windows and go to Linux.  Anybody know anything more about progress on making Profiler work beyond the above?

At the moment, there's no progress. I've just given an update (or lack thereof) in the technical support thread.

Why not to use virtual machines? I run at the moment six virtual machines (XP, Linux, W2K3) in one hardware without any problems and would never ever even consider to go back multi boot systems or separate computers.

A virtual machine has to run parallel to the main system and you need a license for that operating system your are running virtually. With Wine, you are running within the desired operating system directly and don't require an additional license...

For Mac users the virtualizer Parallels is a good option. It even introduces a coherence feature, so the DVDP window appears native on the Mac desktop.
Yes, you need to buy Parallels and yes, you need to license Windows...
