I'm still coming across inconsistencies in the formatting of child profiles for movie box sets.  It has finally dawned on me (sorry I'm slow) that the database only presents me with titles in my collection.  So I see how inconsistencies are inevitable since not everyone gets to see what is being voted on.

Universal Studios has this great series out called The Franchise Collection, where they pack great amounts of movies onto double-sided double-layered discs.  One disc might hold four or five movies.  In submitting child profiles for these types of box sets, some members have split the double-sided discs as if they were separate one-sided discs.  The contribution rules already allow for the splitting of 1 movie per side double-sided discs:

Quote:
The term "Box Set" is used to define any release that includes more than one film. The main examples are:

    * Sets where each film is packaged individually, and held together in a package of some kind.
    * Sets where each film is on a separate disc, but not individually packaged. This includes gatefold Digipaks and 2-Disc sets in normal DVD cases.
    * Sets containing 2 films, one on each side of Dual-Sided DVD.

Create individual profiles for each movie in these Box Sets. Use individual UPCs if they are available or use Disc ID (read on a DVD-ROM) if not.

So this is all well and good with me, I've been adding into my inventory each disc side from the Universal Monsters Legacy Collection and am finding most of the sides already exist as child profiles.  For those sides that don't yet exist, I have to add blank profiles so that DVD Profiler will know from the disc IDs to download them when they appear (or I submit them myself  )

But now...I moved on to the Abbott and Costello Franchise Collection sets and have found child profiles are by disc only, four movies per double-sided disc/child profile.  I then saw an Abbott and Costello split-disc profile voted down in the database because "This not a disc it is a SIDE"

The inconsistency I see here in Monster Legacy vs. Abbott and Costello Franchise is that these two sets are the exact same physical format, but in the database they are different listing formats.

The only way to know which profiles exist is to enter every side into my inventory and see what DVD Profiler 3 pulls from the database.  If the profile is blank, I must keep it there in case it becomes available for download or is up for database votes.  Since I don't know what to expect, I must populate my inventory with blank profiles in case they come up.  I wouldn't have to do this if the database were consistent.

For myself, the best argument for one profile/one disc is that DVD Profiler 3 is ready to handle that with fields for double-sided discs and dividers for casts and crews.

On the other hand, the DVD Title field is often not large enough to accommodate four movie titles in a row.

What do you think?

This would inflate your disc count, resulting in bogus numbers. That is enough of a reason not to do this. Just a rough guess this would probably inflate title count to around 4500, from over 3000.

Why would you not just as you do with TV. List the The Title of the Set: Disc 1, your individual film titles will be listed in Cast and Crew data and your Overview. We don't try to list the TV Episodes as titles.<scratching head>.

One movie on each side = 2 profiles.

We've been doing it like that for a long time and it's worked fine.

Skip even has a few in his collection like Revenge of the Nerds / Revenge of the Nerds II and The Karate Kid Part III / The Next Karate Kid

With multiple movies per side, ideally, it should be one profile per movie but the program doesn't support that. The closest you can get is one profile per side, so it makes sense to go with that.

And with dividers I won't have to create bogus discs anymore, I can actually track the Disc itself, its contents and where it is on the disc(Side A or B).

Except dividers only work for Cast and Crew. If you want to track the other information available you need to have separate profiles.

I've realized dividers, Skip, but they don't work for movies because the technical specs differ: aspect ratios, audio tracks, subtitles, etc. Can't have accurate profiles nor track those specs without separate profiles. Works fine for TV shows where the specs tend to be common across all discs, but not for movies.

I can't see the rules have changed either. Two movies on two sides of one disc is a box set. Doesn't matter if three discs like that are bundled together IMHO.

The rules are pretty clear, doesn't matter if the movies are on oposite sides of the disc.

Sets containing 2 films, one on each side of Dual-Sided DVD.

Each side should get its own child profile, if there are multiple movies on each side split the cast and crew using dividers.

Surely you should be able to track them via the Disc ID's.

As in Superman Collection region 2 local UK disc 1 has Superman the Movie on side A, and the bonus features on side B, both sides have their own unique Disc ID's
side A = 8E2343A1EA125BF5 [SUPERMAN_THE_MOVIE]
side B = 18413EB79C366BAB [SUPERMAN_THE_MOVIE]
which means too just profile them by Disc ID

just my 2 cents worth.

The bonus features side shall not have it's own profile, I suppose:
Quoting the Rules:
Quote:
If a Box Set contains discs of Bonus Material for individual films, do not create separate profiles for these discs. Add the information to the individual film’s profile as normal for a single film 2-Disc set. If there is a disc of Bonus Material for all films included in the Box-set, create a separate profile for this disc.

I'm behind this one all the way!!! That is, as long as there is at least one film on that side of the disc.

That depends entirely on what you are counting, Skip. If someone is counting discs you would be right but if a person is counting titles your method would be the one with the bogus numbers. Of course, if a person is counting purchases, your method is also giving bogus numbers.

i, too, agree with the way the rules are: 2 sides, 2 movies, 2 disc-id profiles. all the the mgm midnite movie double features that i own are set up this way, and several of us here have taken a lot of time and work to get them correct.

as for multiple movies on each side, such as the hammer collection from universal, the new dividers work great for me for cast/crew.

if you're finding inconsistencies, i.e., profiles that aren't created to the rules, i'd suggest correcting and updating them to the database. that's how consistent, rule-based profiles get into the system for all to share.

that's my two dimes and nickle...need the quarters for laundry...
